Question: Why are the archŠologists not all over this project? I'd think if any property were to have First Nation's artifacts, it'd be land very near a body of fresh water. Or is it because these buildings won't be blocking a 1 percenter's view?

Archeological compliance statement:
http://web6.seattle.gov/dpd/edms/Get...Docs&id=793463

And you're right it's first nation activity in distant past at sites like this on shore of Lake Union and around present day Seattle Center that are cited by the state archeologist in support of assertion of high probability of artifacts at project sites in South Lake Union, Denny triangle and Belltown. It's the assertion that artifacts survived the regrade in sites in Denny Triangle and Belltown that I find extremely dubious.

Crews busy on new SLU campus for Google, set to open in 2019

By BENJAMIN MINNICK
Journal Construction Editor

Crews have been seen working nights on four new buildings for Google's South Lake Union campus, which is set to open in 2019.

They have started excavating two full blocks bounded by Valley and Mercer streets, and Terry and Fairview avenues north. Valley Street separates the parcels from MOHAI and the shores of Lake Union.

Vulcan Inc. broke ground last month on the complex, which will have about 607,000 square feet of office space for Google, plus 149 apartments and 14,000 square feet of retail along Valley and Terry.

The apartments will be in two towers that rise eight and nine stories above the six-story office buildings. One tower will be at the corner of Boren Avenue North and Valley, and the other will be at Terry and Mercer.

Apartments will be market rate with condo-type finishes such as engineered wood flooring and quartz countertops. Residents will share a rooftop deck, fitness center and community room.

An east-west “woonerf” will run through the center of the block to provide a pedestrian connection between Terry and Boren. There also will be landscaped open space along Mercer between Terry and Fairview, and public plazas with flexible seating and green space.

The two Google blocks are part of the Lakefront Blocks that Vulcan has been working on for a number of years. Lakefront Blocks also includes a third block between Westlake and Terry that could house a six-story, 161,000-square-foot office building below a 10-story, 216-unit residential tower.

Vulcan said it will wait for an office tenant before starting on that block.

Graphite Design Group is lead designer and GLY is the contractor for the two-block complex.

Two towers with 149 apartments will sit above 607,000 square feet of office space.

Using the term "towers" to describe any part of these two buildings is strange. They look like tower stubs or stumps.

Google Campus updates, 6/18/17

Interestingly, they're digging out the east 2/3 of the east block and the west 2/3 of the west block. What's in between is still more or less at street level.

Weird.

What's that at the bottom corner of the Boren/Fairview lot? Did they pour there already for some reason?

It's what's referred to as a rat slab. It's 3-4 inches of concrete that is used basically as a working surface. You see it used all of the time on sites that have large mat footings. On these projects, it wouldn't surprise me if the whole basement footprint get's rat-slabbed as I'd imagine they're very close to the water table. Mushy ground makes work miserable for all involved.

Above explanation is right on. I'd just add that besides being a good working surface for rebar placers etc, they also preserve the compaction of the subgrade receiving the foundation. The dirt squeezers (geotech inspectors) can document the dirt is property prepped for foundations and then the rat slab is usually cast before weeks of mat footing preparation.

Another view - must've been there earlier than Boulder. I was safely stopped at a light.
