Looks like Darwin will sink one of their open air car parks this year to help reduce the heat in part of their CBD.

Quote:

Deadly mix of heatwaves and humidity could make some Australian cities virtually ‘uninhabitable’
WITH temperatures nudging 70C, this CBD has already been dubbed a “river of fire”. Deadly heatwaves could make it a no-go zone.
Quote:
In August, the Territory Government kicked off a project to see where Darwin’s hot spots were — and what was causing them — so they could cool the CBD down.

....

.....

“In Darwin, you have overheating because there’s too much bitumen and not enough greenery”.

The study will continue for the next year but the Government said it is already burying one of its major carparks to reduce its impact on air temperatures.

I wonder what the visitors will think of Darwin.

Apparently there will be 30,000 cruise ship visitors this year going to Darwin.

Found this on YouTube.

Posted in January 2018! Video has subtitles in two languages... I would have not had like 4 of those buildings in there but swapped them out with other more interesting buildings.

Yeah, I agree. Where are the 130 Esplanade towers, Mitchell Centre, Oasis on Woods...these would all be taller than the Hilton, H105 Mitchell, Marrakai or Zen.

This photo is in Larrakeyah looking towards the City. The City centre does not have any above ground electricity service.

IIRC the NTG have a program in place that seeks to sink powerlines around the Territory with X amount of street powerlines sunk every 3 or 4 years...?!?

That construction is for an underground car park to replace the above-ground parking in front of Parliament and the Supreme Court.

There's also the 10-storey office tower called Manunda Place on corner of Cavenagh St and Knuckey St being built:

The image you posted above shows the scaffolding up on the existing building, Cavenagh House (image below), which is being pulled down for the new tower to be built:

Plus lots of road infrastructure construction for the new Garramilla Boulevard entry road into the CBD:

The following I am posting in here as it is APRIL FOOLS DAY (April the 1st) and I am not sure how serious this is.

Please note I have posted the first two articles in this order as I KNOW the second two articles (articles 3 & 4) look definitely FOOLS DAYS STORIES!!!

Article 1:

Arafura Games Minister Natasha Fyles is so confident in the success of the Arafura Games she’s planning a Commonwealth Games bid. Picture: JUSTIN KENNEDY

Commonwealth Games bid and new Myilly Point stadium

PHILLIPPA BUTT, NT News
April 1, 2019 12:30am

THE NT Government is so confident in the success of the Arafura Games, it is planning a Commonwealth Games bid complete with a new 50,000 stadium at Myilly Point which would be leased to a Chinese company after the Games to help finance the bid, sources have said.

According to high level staffers in the portfolio, Arafura Games Minister Natasha Fyles has requested the department file a bid for the 2030 Games.

The source said Ms Fyles was disappointed the Territory had missed the December 31 cut-off for the 2026 competition.

“At that stage she wasn’t the minister in charge of the competition so she couldn’t ask for a bid to be made,” the source said.

“However, she has requested we contact the Commonwealth Games Committee and ask them to consider a late proposal should Adelaide’s bid not be accepted.”

An artist’s impression of what the Myilly Point stadium could look like. It would be leased to a Chinese company or a 99-year lease after the Games.

Although currently dealing with a wonky tennis court, the source said Ms Fyles wasn’t worried about the bid as she had a secret weapon up her sleeve.

“She wants to build a new 50,000 seat stadium at Myilly Point,” they said.

“The Chief hasn’t signed off on it yet, but she’s definitely got enough people on her side to support the suggestion.

“The Government has learnt its lesson from trying to build a museum at Myilly Point — clearly Territorians aren’t that arty. Really, it’s sport they’re going to get behind, which is why we’re going to build the stadium there.”

In a big to help finance the games the stadium would be leased to a Chinese company or a 99-year lease after the games.

And the idea seems to have support from the Opposition.

A staffer for Opposition Leader Gary Higgins said he was “100 per cent” on board with the Commonwealth Games bid and as a former NT sports minister “could completely see the benefit of a stadium on Myilly Point”.

The Arafura Games budget has already doubled its original plans.

It is not known how much the Commonwealth Games bid will cost the Territory, or how much the Government is set to spend on a new stadium.

End of an era as NT News editor chooses to end the funny front pages

STAFF WRITERS, NT News
April 1, 2019 12:30am

THE funny front pages the NT News is famous for will end, effective immediately.

Editor Matt Williams said the time had come to align with other newspapers around Australia and to become politically correct.

“We have received an enormous amount of feedback from locals and people around Australia and they just want us to grow up,” he said.

“This hasn’t been a decision I’ve taken lightly but the days of ‘Why I’ve got a cracker up my clacker’ and ‘Why I’ve got some sticky near my dicky’ have come to a close.”

Image 2: https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/...3a2?width=1024
The likes of which you will never see again.

Williams said the paper had conducted a “root and branch” review of their front pages and it was time for a change in direction.

“We fully understand this decision might upset millions of people but boring seems to be what people want so we’re happy to accommodate the lust for boringness,” he said.

“We’ll still run funny stories in our paper but you won’t see them on the front page.

“I certainly apologise in advance if this decision is distressing to some.”

Williams said he might reconsider his position if one million people sign a Change.org petition saying they want funny front pages to continue.

These two are clearly APRIL's FOOL FAKE NEWS stories... As if you will put a 12m sign on top of a building that appears to read: CU in the NT, just so tourists flying into Darwin can see it at night.

ARTICLE 3:

Yeah the Ghan won't last if this is converted to a maglev railway.
The likely hood of this project is on par with the Maglev Bus to Caboolture project.

Ok the stadium has come up in discussion before... read this article about the land in which it would sit on is for sale.

SkyCity puts prime beach front site on the market:
https://www.realestate.com.au/news/s...on-the-market/

Just because this Myilli site just happens to be near to a golf course that render is not for the same site....

Alas that first article might be a true story but the image... i did a reverse image search on it and found it several times....

It is for Qatar Foundation Stadium....

https://www.qatarliving.com/forum/sp...ain-contractor

Would be cool though if they had something built there....
