Over the years the stadium has improved quite a lot. It is quite a good stadium for football now. But there is still quite a lot to do to make it even better. It is currently packed full for the game Ajax - Juventus.

Permission has been granted for the 2,75 m tall statue of Cruijff in front of the stadium.

More safe standing to come in the JCA?

This bloke went on a guided stadium tour yesterday and posted this afterwards.

I hope he was not misinformed.

Expanding safe-standing to the entire stand is impossible without blocking the view of the wheelchair positions top left and right.

A logical choice would be to transform the northern stand in a similar fashion, though that would come at the expensive of current capacity.

15 November 2017: within 1,5 years Ajax will decide whether or not to relocate to another stadium

24 May 2019: Ajax have stated they will not seek a majority of shares in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, at least not before 2028.

25 May 2019: 35,000 people ar currently on the waiting list for season tickets. In comparison: the PSV Stadium's capacity is 35k.

As of this date, a building licence has been requested and granted for minor improvements/adjustments. So as for the expansion of the remaining concourses, there is no movement at the moment.

By then, Arena completely refreshed their elite UEFA rating. it will be among most modern stadiums in Europe.

You can also view the Arena as sustainable powerplant and/or transport hub. Not to mention it's multi usage, with plenty non football events and activities. Compared to most Mediterranean stadiums, the Amsterdam Arena is a money generating machine.

With or without LEDs, Ajax future is bright, specifically since their squad has some exceptional talents: De Ligt, De Jong, Zyiech, Onane, Dolberg, vd Beek.
€178 miljoen Eigen Vermogen, according to januari 2019 halfannual report. That is, without Frenkie's €80m sale (minus some bought players) to Barcelona.

Current situation is that Ajax still has a minority stake in Arena and although they have first ownership rights on governmental share (~€25m), voting rights are held by founding partners, which also are great sponsors.

Obviously, the ownership-voting talks didn't turn in Ajax favor yet, so sadly, investments are post-phoned. A bit strange, given the commitment to UEFA to be host city with an upgraded stadium.

Given huge fan demand, expanding safe standing, an extra row and fixing the corners seem really urgent to at least finalize the "football experience"-fix; time for Ajax to break this years Dutch fan records again. Eredivisie matches with 57.000 fans seem really cool!
So the Cruyff statue is a nice and very welcome addition. And as you can see in the picture below, they can improve the interior lighting to bring some more atmosphere.

Ajax will keep pushing for Arena ownership/voting to invest and grow it's budget towards €150 million. The sooner they replace the movable roof with a much lighter material, to be accompanied with 2 video walls and sunpanels on the short sides, the better. Essential for branding and growing budget, and finishing the promenade.

*> Expanding and buying trainingscomplex de toekomst, €35 million. maybe 2022?

Interestingly, the western side was scheduled as phase 4, after the eastern (1), northern (2) and southern concourse. There is no indication as of when work should start on the northern and southern sides.

Works include renovating and enlarging VIP-facilities and preparatory work for the expansion of the western concourse. Work on the western concourse should start around 2020.

Most captivating is the relocation of the control center in the middle of the main stand. The semi-circular look-out post will disappear.

It will be replaced by 101 ‘VVIP'-seats. Two further skyboxes will be demolished to create a ‘super lounge’ though their seats will be retained.
Work has progressed over the last weeks. According to a JCA spokesperson some 60 additional seats will be created. This revamp will come at the expense of (101-60) some 40 seats. So it appears that after its announcement 10 years ago, capacity has officially passed 55k.

Nice atmosphere.

I hope they’ll be able to expand the current safe-standing section on the southern stand first tier. Its current capacity is just under 3,000. The current safety plan does not allow for additional spectators as they have maxed out by creating the four extra rows in front of the stand.

They would have to make adjustments to the stand of course. Extra exits will be needed. And of course the structure should be able to resist the strain. It would be a nice gesture to provide for more cheaper tickets. By far most of the extra seats in the moat are for VIP’s on the main stand or cost between 480-700 euros/530-780 dollars on the opposite stand.

AMSTERDAM - Johan Cruijff ArenA (55,134) - UEFA EURO 2020

FINALLY, after 23 years: all four corners will be covered with stands. Capacity will go up with 800 to 1,000 seats. Works are scheduled to begin early 2020 and will be ready for the EURO. The adjustments will be quite costly, and are said not to be profitable, but are considered necessary in response to high ticket demands.

Source: Ajax Life, the official supporters magazine

This extension will come next to the current expansion of VVIP-seats in the main stand. Current capacity of 54,990 will go up with a few dozen seats. Total capacity will thus go up to between 55,800 and 56,000 seats.

From a study in August 2006 study by engineering consultancy Arcadis:

Below is a small indication of what it may look like. This is what it looked like shortly before EURO 2000 to January 2001. Two corners were filled with temporary stands.

Originally, the four corners were scheduled to host additional wheelchair positions or TV studios. Luckily the latter will no longer be possible.
