A broad based index fund would be a sound investment.

too early, simfan. this requires a mature stock market.
ADSX (let say the future acronym of Addis Ababa Stock marketplace) need to growth, add more than 70 IPOs. i believe equity market may thrive at the beginning. then more sophisticated financial tools may come up later....
bonds from the ethio government to finance infra will be the best investment since economy is growing at least at 7-8%.

from negatu:
Quote:
(FDI) in Africa: Currently $12 trillion is invested in bonds worldwide yielding less than ZERO %. Source: ft
By contrast total FDI into Africa in 2018, which will earn far more than negative yielding bonds, was only $48 billion!

an example where the gov must step in.

ho many banks in Ethiopia ? around 17.
Amhara Bank raised 500M birrs to establish a commercial bank in Ethiopia.
another bank..again

we may have a bank per tribe/ethnicity/language : beyond stupidity.

gov is planing to open up the financial sector : so he should stop issuing licences for new banks and force them to merge.
Ethiopian banks are way to small, uncompetitive, with low capital and assets.

the so-called ''international'' banks are set to be swallowed quickly as soon as fellow african banks step in local market. i predict most of them may disappear...

I agree. It's beyond stupid to open an Amhara Bank or an Oromo Bank. You're willingly narrowing down your potential customer base just by naming your bank in such a way, not to say anything of the very concept of an ethnic bank. Dumb.
