Gorgeous old-school stadium. Here you can see 12 minutes long highlights from the Man City - Arsenal football match it has just hosted: http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-arc...anchester-city

I like it - just needs a paint job.

One of the best examples of functionalism in stadium architecture, and a real beauty! Hope they won't spoil it in the upcoming renovation.

The stadium is protected to the max. There was years of fighting just to get much needed basic repairs done for it years ago.

It will be matter of time before new stadium. Thing is that this stadium wont ever be allowed to be neglected, let alone demolished. 40 000 stadium, small 10 770 football pitch, 13 500 and 9000 seat hockey rings (plus another +10 000 ring being build in the coming years for HIFK) and new + 40 000 stadium would be quite a bit for Helsinki to handle.

It must happen at some point as Helsinki Olympic stadium isn't up for many of the larger athletic event standards anymore, but I fear that will take quite a while.

This week we could read that Helsinki can't bid for UEFA Euro 2020 matches because even the renovated Olympic Stadium won't meet the UEFA requirements. Still, they will be able to bid for the UEFA Super Cup.

Given the renovation won't improve much the stadium's ability to host major sports events, I think the renovation is a waste of money. Helsinki needs a new stadium, either to a new place or to replace the current Olympic Stadium. My choice would be to replace the current stadium with an architecturally similar but bigger stadium. The stadium tower and maybe the main grandstand could be left from the current stadium.

Details of renovations at Helsinki Olympiastadion:

* Renovation of Helsinki Olympiastadion is priced at €209 million.
* Last year, there was a decision to keep all of the stadium's historical architecture intact.
* Planned to serve without any further structural changed for the next ~75 years, the stadium will change most significantly inside.
* The east stands canopy (added in 2005) will be expanded to the curves, providing cover for all of the stands. Supports for the new roof will be erected inside the stadium to preserve the original look. The roof structure is to be covered with wood.
* The current, old wooden seats will be put out on auction and replaced by new ones. The replacement will be similar in style, since wood is on of the Olympiastadion's biggest assets.
*The stadium's capacity will be reduced to 35-36,000 from the current 40,000 due to corporate seating.
* The works are to take place between 2016 and 2019 (Tender winners will be delivered in 2015).
* Also, revamped training and indoor sports facilities, as well as new exhibition, conference and banqueting facilities, will also be created, improving revenue and community use.
* The initial plan foresaw a modern pavilion to the south of the stadium, which was dropped from the current plan.

By paying 18 euros people were allowed to saw piece of the old wood benches. Just before the renovation of the stadium.

This whole renovation does irritate me to no end. It will keep the status quo situation here, rather than fixing anything. Even the whispers of new stadium died when the 210 million renovations for Olympic stadium became clear.

We did not get that big investment to Olympic stadium a la Berlins Olympic Stadium, rather capacity will decrease by 5000 and get ever so slight modernization. Neither did we get clear push for new modern stadium in the coming years with this decision.
So we ended up with slightly modernized 50s stadium and now the inevitable need of new modern stadium pushed indefinable into the future.

About the ends/turns of the Olympiastadion's athletics track looking wrong: Could the ends/turns of the Olympiastadion's athletics track be corrected during the renovation or could the track stay the same as it is currently (with the short turns)? I hope they won't have to tear down the Olympiastadion's end stands just to correct the turns of its athletics track.

Shouldn't this be in the renovation/construction section? Especially considering the change in capacity?

Yes, it can be moved. I confirmed with the stadium director that the new capacity will be slightly more than 36,000.

The webcam image should be updated every hour.

And here we are... Apparently the cost won't be 210 million but instead it will be over 300 million.

An article in finnish only (sorry):

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/muutlajit/...005063724.html

The blowed up price tag doesn't surprise me at all. This is always the case with big public funded projects in Finland. And what do we get for this money? An outdated and ugly athletics stadium with a roof supported by view obstructing pillars.
