Building an Olympic Stadium facade requires precision and good carpentry skills. The renovation of the 80-year-old Helsinki Olympic Stadium has been underway since 2016.

Now the facade is being renovated, which is the responsibility of Siparila for materials and installation. The exterior cladding of a cultural monumental national monument is made as identical as the original cladding. In the renovation, the wooden cladding of the facades is renewed according to the old model, but raising two meters to make the new look stains hidden behind the facade. The facades will be completed in late 2019.

The wooden facade, which is structurally higher than before, has been constructed with an independent support structure, to which the frame structure and the wood exterior are attached. The greatest difficulty in repairing the façade of the stadium is the challenging shape of the facade: the exterior tilting wall surfaces, especially the curves.

The exterior cladding of the Olympic stadium is carried out from the Finnish PEFC-certified, fine-sided spruce board. With a finer-than-fine fine-grained finish, the paint surface stays better on the rough surface, bringing the weathering required for the exterior trim in challenging conditions. The outer envelope of the Olympic Stadium includes a huge 9000 m2 wall area. The total quantity of sawn timber is up to 500 m3. Computationally, the Olympic Stadium's wood exterior will bind up to 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide per life cycle. The exterior panels are treated under industrially controlled conditions. The last paint finish according to the painting certificate will be applied to the surface of the installed exterior trim during next summer.

Is the new siding supposed to look brown? If so, it kind of clashes with the majestic nature of the tower.

The work is progressing in leaps and bounds - the ground work on the runways has been completed in the field. The Mondo coating will be installed in spring 2020.

There was talk of another stadium, though those discussions died rather quickly. I was for totally new stadium, but at the same time one can ask if there is huge need for a new stadium. Football isn't large enough sport here compared to hockey to support new +40 000 stadium. It's hard enough to fill the current stadium for football.
same as in Germany. this stadium was very modern in 1938 but it's a mistake spending 300 million euros on rubbish.

with 300 million euros you would have built one of the most modern 40k-stadiums in Europe. plus removing the track..

this seater is rubbish although indeed hosted a historical Olympics event.

and regarding football, I know ice hockey is popular more popular in Finland but 30k would still be the need. it's a national stadium and it's better to have than not to have.

maybe Finland is considering hosting the Winter Olympics? I don't think Helsinki is far from any town?

so if they don't host the Winter Olympics this building has no value historically (300 million euros for it). moreover I even think Nazi (if it's not Auschwitz) and communist buildings have no value. they would have value only if you would not have at all post-interwar period buildings. well, this is off-topic.

good luck with it, I will watch it! at the end it will be like building it from 0, just that some facades will be like in the past.

An article in finnish only (sorry):

The blowed up price tag doesn't surprise me at all. This is always the case with big public funded projects in Finland. And what do we get for this money? An outdated and ugly athletics stadium with a roof supported by view obstructing pillars.
the cost of the arenas have been increased everywhere in the past last years.
