Guangdong province has 110 million people in 179,000 km² (larger than England and Wales put together).

citypopulation.de places the Pearl River Delta at 48 million people, ahead Tokyo (39 million) as the largest urban agglomeration in the world. I feel it's not a cohese metro area yet as Tokyo is. Guangzhou and Shenzhen seems to be too disconnected.

It seems to be in this 'weird' grey area where it's 48 million today but could become something much much bigger. There are a number of urban areas around the world that are similar. They're not one entity today but look like they will be eventually.

The Bay Area, Greater Golden Horseshoe, and that area around Sao Paulo you outlined come to mind.

The Pearl River City is still a contiguous city though, ever since an arm of Shenzhen coursed up the estuary and linked with Dongguan (check it out on Google Earth). As of 2015 Guangzhou-Dongguan-Shenzhen officially became the world's biggest city, with 41 million people (metro 55 million/ agglomeration 65 million). It's the biggest single urban mass - not to be confused with a megalopolis.

Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Hong Kong etc aren't counted because there are small gaps:

This is why in 2015 the Pearl River City was recognised as a single urban entity, and officially became the world's largest city following the World Bank Report on urbanisation in that year:

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2...ity-urban-area

Do check it out on Google Earth

overview of the three cities:

The border between Dongguan-Shenzhen

The border between Guanzhou-Dongguan (one of several merge points)

Zoom -this is not a low density exurb or satellite (notice the highrise developments casting shadows on either side of the river):

They are indeed liked by continuous urbanized areas but it doesn't seem to function as one metro area. Maybe in the future, with higher population and density.

One could argue São Paulo and Campinas are also one single urban area. Traveling 228 km through (dense) urban areas only:

Very much appreciate the stats with populations taking in km radius. It can be a great way to make a fair comparison between cities BUT only when those cities are away from water or another natural barrier.

For cities who's downtown is right on a ocean/lake, that means that 100km radius for Boston, Toronto, or Barcelona only results in half the sq kms of cities that are not against barriers such as Atlanta, Berlin, Montreal, or Paris.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pear..._Rapid_Transit

"According to the plan, by 2020, Pearl River Delta Rapid Transit network will have a total route mileage of about 600 kilometres (370 mi).[2][3] In September 2009, the plan was expanded to 1,478 km (918 mi) of routes split up into 23 lines. In the long term vision network length will reach 1,890 km (1,170 mi) by 2030. By then the network will provide basic coverage to the Pearl River Delta region."

"Transportation will be the economic backbone of the region and regeneration is planned around the transportation corridors to avoid isolated communities and maximise the benefits of investment. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has ambitious plans for a “one hour commuting circle” twice the size of Wales, ensuring connection between all the cities within one hour through high speed rail connections and the expansion of expressways. Chinese expertise in large scale infrastructure construction is helping meet the target. With Guangzhou at its core, 23 high speed railways will integrate the cities into a diverse polycentric region with multiple industries for investment and multiple locations for citizens to work, play, live, and learn, all within one hour of travel. Of these, 16 (or 1,480km) are to be completed by 2020. The HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge will open up the comparatively underdeveloped West Bank of the Pearl River Delta. An additional bridge between Shenzhen and Zhongshan will start in 2016 and be finished by 2021, connecting the West Bank further. Further connectivity will be ensured with investment in intra-city travel by Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan. Guangzhou will have the largest (20 line) metro network in the GPRD by 2040. Thirteen routes with a combined length of 228.9km have been approved by the NDRC at a cost of £129bn. The local government in Shenzhen is building a 720km, 20 line metropolitan system with 10 lines to be completed by 2016."

Also I don't think SP - Campinas is comparable, I've checked it out on GE and there are large tracts of open land and fields, threaded through with the highway, and no houses.

Also alot of the 'link's look like exurbs, which is not what I'm talking about in a contiguous city.

^that is not a contiguous link. This is - high density, multi-function, urban rather than suburban:

By the freeways (Bandeirantes and Anhanguera), it's indeed green all the way as they cut through forested mountains.

If you go internally, through urban areas, is all urbanized. Caieiras, Franco da Rocha and Francisco Morato (São Paulo metro area) are linked to Campo Limpo Paulista and Várzea Grande (Jundiaí metro area). And Jundiaí is connected by Louveira with Vinhedo and Valinhos (Campinas metro area). Keep in mind, unlike in the US, Brazilian urban areas are quite dense, ranging from 2,000 inh/km2 to 10,000 inh/km2 in this region. Even by strict criteria, you never leave urban areas there.

This corridor is also growing at a very fast pace (over 20%/decade).

As expected, there are some problematic cases, specially on City Population. Demographia seems more worried to provide more precise numbers and coherent definitions.

All those huge cities in the Pearl Delta but outside of China, I bet 90% of the planet have never heard of any of them save Hong Kong.

Chinese, and for that matter most non-western, cities have consistently underperformed as "global" cities, which partly maps to name recognition.

It is changing though. A decade ago an outsider would be likely to know Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and not much more.

The fastest riser since must have been Shenzhen. You cannot work in the IT industry and not know Shenzhen. Chongqing has been a laggard, reputationwise. A decade ago it was all over the place, "the biggest city you never heard of". A decade later it still is the biggest Chinese city not having made much of an impact. It, Dalian and Tianjin probably suffer from being associated with a now disowned political faction.

Back to Pearl River, I noticed Foshan has made the cut as a "global city", surprising to me as I would discount it as Guangzhou outskirt. The capital Guangzhou, Canton, has also fallen behind the shine that is Shenzhen.

The city to watch internationally is Dongguan. It never was a city, just a collection of factory towns and dormitories. It is turning into a city now. That's a fairly sharp transition from export-led manufacturing base to a normal service-led city. If Dongguan succeeds we can be pretty sure China succeeds.

The city to watch domestically is Zhongshan. The famous cities along Pearl River are on the East side, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Hong Kong. The West side is less developed, Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Macau.
