432 has to be a tall attention seeker. Other wise no one would notice it.

Well exactly, it's tall and that's about it. Everything else about it is atrocious.

"Sticks" as you call them used to define the 1930s skyline of NYC, especially buildings like 40 Wall and 70 Pine in Lower Manhattan. Even the Chrysler looks like a stick in older photographs, without other buildings surrounding it. The gotham skyline used to be defined by slim and soaring towers.

40 Wall, 70 Pine, Chrysler were anything but sticks. But they sure put to shame most of these newer buildings.

God forbid that in a city that is world renowned for it's skyscrapers, anyone would build even taller buildings.
That would ruin it!!!

Even though the current proposal is really boring and uninspiring, this proposal is a bit too much.

I like the fact that they considered something out of the ordinary, but there is too much going on with this project.

Although I do like some of the elements. If the design can be simplified and the over the top architectural elements can be reduced and kept to some portions of the tower (bottom, middle and top) just as accents for the building, we can have something interesting.

So the current design is 'boring and uninspiring' AND 'too much going on and need to be simplified' at the same time?
Gotcha!🤪

Yeah gotcha, it's not like melads is talking about two completely different and unrelated designs, right? Must be very difficult to scroll up and look at the quoted post.

Yet the two cantilevers exist for two completely different reasons and you're not even aware of it...

I don't do a 30 mins research going back 5 pages at every vaguely worded post - but yeah, I get it, he was talking about that laughingly bad Dungeons&Dragons style BS 'proposal' that really need to be simplified by formatting the hard drives it's files were stored on...that'd help

It's just supertall for supertalls sake.

Have to say I love how ESB bosses that Hudson picture. Build them as tall as you like but there is only one king of NYC.
But you do realize the ESB is essentially a box too? Or you do not?
It's not like the ESB is some Versailles diva with powdered wig, and rouge on both sides.
It doesn't even have any Italian or Greek columns so I don't exactly get what's the hysteria about it, frankly it's just another box, with a heavy industrial looking spire.

IF it is a box, it is certainly a very beautiful one...
Also, I doubt Tower Fifth will have details like these:

detailed polished metal mullions like that are something that desperately needs to come back into style (like with 111w57th!)

When it comes to form, this tower will be a sort of reverse ESB. Rather than setting back as it gets taller, it will jut outwards. As far as the materials, some people can't appreciate simplicity, which is fine. I can understand viewing it as boring, but another way to look at it is efficient and clean. Comparatively, art deco is more to behold, but arguably over the top.

ESB style is no box, is more like ziggurat supertall.

So the childish argument at the begging is, it's a box, which I understand, not many people can claim an architecturally rich vocabulary. Afterwards, turns out there are nice boxes and ugly boxes.

New York cannot sleep in the 30's like time froze in that decade.
Some people just need to understand that time is moving on. So is architecture.
And I say thank you, you majestic, tremendous, cosmic universe for making us diverse and innovate new staff.

A world of 100 same 111w57th buildings sounds so, so dull.
A world of nothing but historic architecture is so, so dull.

I feel as though Chicago style architecture will always look nice.
