Anyways, i was reading on another forum that the works that are underway at the moment is only tarmac extension.

Err JayT, the Los Angeles flights you have listed are a wrong. Currently there is only 4 non stop Brisbane - Los Angeles services. The extra 7 are currently operating via Auckland.

From February, the direct services will increase to 5, but the services operating via Auckland, will be re-routed to MEL-AKL-LAX.

There is also only 14 flights from Brisbane to Avalon

Is the re-routing to Melbourne just for the Commonwelath Games or a permanent move? Seems strange because the LAX flights are so packed.

No, they are permenant. BNE - LAX loads arn't that fantastic. Which is why capacity has been reduced.

Doubt that very much - the BNE-LAX flights are very profitable to Qantas. Besides Emirates would step in with BNE-LAX flights the second Qantas yealds.

I was on BNE-AKL-LAX flights over christmas and every single seat was taken. Maybe it was the season.

Airports need steady hand, says professor

BRISBANE airport has the potential to become a superior "aerotropolis" with a workforce and economy matching that of a typical Australian regional city, says one of the world's airport experts.

But he has also warned the development needs to be carefully handled to ensure the best economic efficiencies, aesthetics, environmental outcomes and sustained urban economic development.

Professor John Kasarda, in Brisbane to help the Queensland University of Technology produce concepts that could be adopted by the Brisbane Airport Corporation, warned haphazard development around the airport could produce the worst fears of those who oppose expanding the airport's precinct.

Professor Kasarda said opposition to airport cities was common because people did not understand the concept.

"They think of them as nothing more than transportation infrastructure where planes land, passengers and cargo transit," Professor Kasarda said.

"But today they have to be much more.

"They have to be multifunctional, doing all types of non-aeronautical activities.

"This boosts the local economy but more importantly cross-subsidises the aeronautical infrastructure development that is very expensive."

Professor Kasarda, a US-based world export on airport-centric development, will tomorrow address business people on the benefits to southeast Queensland if the corporation proceeds with its intention of making Brisbane an airport city.

More than 10,000 people now work at Brisbane Airport and the figure is expected to increase to more than 40,000 – the size of a large regional city – over the next two decades.

The concept of the aerotropolis began at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport which Professor Kasarda described as the "grandfather" airport city with 58,000 workers, shopping malls that combined with terminals and even its own convention centre.

"Schiphol is just one example of how major airports are beginning to drive business location and urban development in the 21st century," Professor Kasarda said.

"Brisbane is already an important airport and the fastest growing in Australia."

I do work in ATC and I wouldn't have the foggiest about passenger loads for certain routes. RPT don't advise POB. It has nothing to do with ATC how many people they cram inside.

I'm not in the aviation industry at all, but just looking at the increase in the number of direct flights from Brisbane to LA seems to go against bad passengers loads.

2004 - 3rd weekly flight added, with comments of 'high passenger loads'
2005 - 4th weekly flight added
2006 - 5th weekly flight to be added.

If passenger loads were so bad, why the continual increase?

Have been at the airport a couple of times in the last few days and road access to the Domestic Terminal has completely changed, not sure how long for. The old drop off zones have all been dug up and a new drop off zone has been added between the taxi zones and the carparks. Its a little difficult to see what exactly they are doing, I would hope that it is an initial step in splitting departures and arrivals like in Sydney and Melbourne but who knows.
