Out with the magnifying glass Brizer. I don't like the look of that handsome cab loitering about the front gates in broad daylight.

On the other hand, if it was the convict records he was after, the foul beast would have entered here through the back gate, surely

But the dog didn't bark ! I'm inclined to believe the architect may have thought he had gone a bit overboard with the whole thing, and decided to erase the evidence from posterity.

Gentlemen, the case is closed.

I have come out here to Willoughby to tell you that the Garden Palace was a monstrosity. Sydney will now have a wonderful Botancial Gardens, and a handsome Library...and maybe, one day, a magnificent Opera House down there by the water.

These things could never happen if that huge imitation dome of St Paul's with baroque adorments remained up there on the hill, dominating all. A pity about the convict records, but let's put the matter to rest, and say thank heavens it's gone. God Save the Queen.

Meantime, one more Max Dupain. Kings Cross at rush hour, 1938;

Thank God the case is closed as I was beginning to look at myself suspiciously having a vague memory of a dark and foggy night...dawn?...and a box of Redheads...

Photos are fantastic. They must be on record somewhere where they can be preserved and be accessible for ordinary folk: this is a question.

One thing you have to say about those C19th chaps, they sure knew how to go over the top, gild the lily and unleash their imagination!

As promised, a handsome library - one of the wonderful old buildings of Sydney's CBD - the State Library of NSW has 4.7m books, it's Mitchell Library Collection undoubtedly the most important historical research collection in the country.

Brizer the Garden Palace pics come up from straight image searches of that name, similarly Max Dupain, but once you get into the National Library of Australia online collections the possibilities are endless. I'll have to go back to the provenance of the Willoughby pic and edit it in ...it came up in one of my random browsings.

To think, if you got into the right position and took a pic looking north this view would be nearly exactly the same...except for trams, skyline behind and right....signs lighting etc...well.. Church, Town Hall and QVB anyway!!!posted in wrong thread before sorry! Circa 1909
