I've been here before. There's nothing stunning about it, it's not overly nice and it doesn't have anything that makes you say wow, but the sightlines and proximity to the field was the best of any stadium I've ever been to.

Adelphia/LP always struck me as a poor man's Gillette Stadium.

It's a great stadium. As was said, it has amazing sightlines and that can make a modest stadium a great one.

Why was the team named after the state not the city? Are there other Tennessee centres of population within spitting distance?

Probably because they played in Memphis after the move from Houston.

other examples are Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Arizona Cardinals, Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, Floorida Panthers, New England Patriots, New Jersey Devils, Carolina Panthers, Texas Rangers, Utah Jazz, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning.

who knows why

The state was partially responsible for funding the construction. Part of the deal was the team would be named Tennessee, instead of Nashville.

Not sure why the state didn't ask for the same thing when they helped finance FEDEx Forum.

often times its because the name of the state or area sounds better or relates better to the overall name.

The Colorado Rockies sounds good because its the name of the mountain rage as well, although it may be confusing.

Utah Jazz sounds a whole lot better than "Salt Lake City Jazz"

Minneapolis Timberwolves is too long IMO, Minnesota Timberwolves rolls off the tongue better.

And then, some teams should be named after the city, like the Golden State Warriors. Thats just dumb IMO.

Carolina is called that because it was awarded to North and South Carolina, not Charlotte. As odd as that sounds. They also played a season in Clemson, SC. It also allows them to draw fans from Raleigh, Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point, Columbia, ect. (Charleston is probably too far). Same goes for Tennessee with Memphis and Chattanooga.

Except when their college basketball team is doing well, of course.

No one in Memphis claims to be part of Tennessee either.

I wasn't aware that the stadium funding agreement had a stipulation about using the name Tennessee, but their first few years they played preseason games and scrimmages against other NFL teams like the Falcons and Panthers in Chattanooga, Knoxville and maybe some places out in western Tennessee. They were trying to promote a unity and get the entire state behind the team. For the most part it worked pretty well, but there are still plenty of people there that prefer the "purity and pageantry" of the college game.

We've got a 51st State now? Man, have I been out of the loop.

(I get what you're saying, but Tampa Bay is a singular metropolitan region and not comparable to the other examples.)
