There will be no visual difference. It's even expected that the ULR version will become the standard at some point as it only uses the existing fueltanks more efficiently then the normal version.

Is there not an extra fuel tank in the hold as well or is that detachable/optional?

It won't have an extra fuel tank, also not as an option. A modified fuel system increases the capacity of the fueltanks that are also in the regular version of the A359.

The original proposals for a ultra long haul version of the A359 would also see the use of the A3510 landing gear = 6 wheel bogies instead of 4 wheel bogies. But that was never implemented in the final ULR design.

It's possible that Airbus will offer a variant, an extra ULR version to Qantas for their wish to fly Sydney - London non stop that will included the larger bogies and and extra tank. But this is just speculation for now, it's not offered on the current ULR version.

Anyone want to have a stab at 2017 total deliveries. It was supposed to be around 100.

Production is to go to 10 a month by this time next year, allegedly.

Airbus says pitching A350 long range plane for Sydney-London non-stop flights
Reuters Excerpt

Airbus SE’s (AIR.PA) talks with Qantas Airways (QAN.AX) about a plane that can fly 20 hours non-stop from Sydney to London are centered around the A350-900ULR rather than reviving a shorter A350 variant, an executive at the manufacturer said on Thursday.

The comments by Airbus’s Iain Grant, head of sales for the Pacific region, could quash industry speculation the European planemaker may revive the smaller A350-800, which had been put on ice after poor sales.

Qantas had publicly challenged Airbus and its U.S. rival Boeing Co (BA.N) in August to boost the range of the A350 and 777X models to allow it to complete “the last frontier” of commercial flying by 2022.

The speculation about the A350-800 revival arose after Qantas CEO Alan Joyce told industry publication Flightglobal this week that Airbus was “saying they may” consider a shorter-fuselage variant if the A350-900ULR (ultra long range) could not meet mission requirements.

Airbus’s Grant, however, said at a media briefing on Thursday that talks with Qantas remained about the A350-900ULR, the same variant that Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) will receive next year to restart non-stop Singapore-New York flights.

“We are bringing in our A350-900ULR which is going to do the Sydney-London mission and we are very comfortable with that and we will continue to work with them to meet their requirements,” he said of the Qantas challenge.

A non-stop Sydney-London route that is three hours shorter than current flights involving stops would allow Qantas to charge a premium and differentiate its product from the around two dozen other airlines plying the so-called Kangaroo route with stop-offs in Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong.

I think these UULRs will be mainly business and some premium economy. Like the all business seat A340 that was the worlds longest flight 5 years back.

Qantas is actually challenging Boeing and Airbus for a plane that can do the Sydney-London non-stop flights with 300 seats.

http://www.smh.com.au/business/aviat...24-gy3sa2.html

This is something completely different then previous attempts for similar flights in premium configurations. People think this will be easier to achieve for Boeing, they can just add auxiliary tanks to the 777-8. Airbus would have to do more with the A359 to make it possible. The talk about a possible revival of the A358 shows that going smaller might be needed to make it possible. The drawback of the A358 would be that it would not fit 300 seats in a 3 class lay-out with enough comfort for such long flights.
