Meru County signs Sh880m loan to upgrade roads

Daily Nation

Friday, November 8, 2013
Quote:
Meru County has signed a Sh880 million loan with the Exim Bank of Malaysia to finance upgrading of 50 kilometres of road within the unit. The deal was arrived at last week during a visit to the Asian country by a delegation of representatives from three counties including Bungoma and Bomet.

The agreement will see a contractor from Malaysia undertake upgrading of five kilometres of road in each of the nine constituencies within the county to bitumen standard.

“We were able to negotiate and sign an agreement upfront for 50 kilometres and a memorandum of understanding for the balance of 250 kilometres. Infrastructure is critical for development of the county as it acts as an economic enabler,” said Meru County Governor Peter Munya on Thursday.

The county government has drawn a plan to tarmac 300 kilometres of road, with 50 kilometres earmarked for completion in the first phase. Of the 50 kilometres of road set to be upgraded to bitumen standard, the county will finance construction of 10 kilometres at a cost of Sh22 million per kilometre from its resources.

In its budget for the current financial year, Meru County has allocated about Sh900 million for development of road network.

The loan will attract an interest of 3 per cent per annum with a repayment period of 10 years. The county is also in talks with Danish investors for development of wind energy at the border of Meru and Isiolo. The area has been identified by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company as having good wind speeds that can be harnessed for electricity generation.

KenGen plans to set up 100MW wind farm in Meru

http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/K...9/-/index.html

Quote:
Power generating company, KenGen plans to set up a 100 megawatts (MW) wind farm in Meru as it seeks to increase the proportion of renewable energy in its production mix.

The project with a completion date of June 2016, is expected to be the second largest wind farm after the Turkana farm expected to generate 300MW.

“The feasibility study is complete and plans are underway to begin development,” said KenGen’s acting managing director Mr Simon Ngure in the company’s recently released annual report.

The Nairobi-listed firm is diversifying to cheaper sources of power such as geothermal and wind in an effort to cut out the more expensive diesel generated energy.

KenGen expects to boost wind power generation from its Ngong farm to 25.5MW by September next year from the current 5.1MW.

“Construction has begun and 6.8MW will be commissioned in March 2014 and 13.6MW will be commissioned in September 2014,” said the company.

There are 12 sites being studied for wind power production, with the target to be raised to 630 MW in the next 40 months.

Governor Munya pledges to pump in Sh120 million (US$ 1.4 mn) to modernise the stadium, which will host KPL champs Tusker FC

The Standard

Impression of what Kinoru Stadium will look like after renovation.

Quote:
By KATHURE MUKURU
Football fans in Meru County will have a chance to watch a top Kenyan Premier League (KPL) team play on their land after the county was chosen as the home ground for Tusker FC. Mafuko Bombers was the last team to use the Meru base for its home matches. But after almost a decade since it closed shop, fans will have a reason to smile as they welcome the former champions. Tusker FC, whose mother company East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) is the main sponsor for the Kenyan Premier League, through its flagship brand Tusker, will be playing at Kinoru Stadium soon after a partnership was struck with the county government.

Speaking during the certifying tour of the stadium by the club’s officials, Tusker FC CEO Charles Obiny said the stadium had met the minimum requirements to host the club. “We are happy that the county has allocated money to upgrade the stadium and we have ascertained that there is no hindrance to having the premier league team here,” Obiny said.

Hatha, yes its the name in Kikuyu. Grew up pranking buddies with it. Pia its a very good ugali "accompaniment" or can use to make mukimo.

(Wiki Answers...) Thabai or hatha is the Kikuyu name for stinging nettles (Urtica Ferox)
