Number of foreign visitors up 45% over last year
By Messenger Staff
Thursday, May 3
According to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 2.8 million people visited Georgia in 2011. Between January and April of 2012, the country has received nearly 1 million visitors – a 45% increase over the same period last year – with over 300,000 in April alone.

This year, the majority of visitors were from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, and Iran. The number of tourists from EU member states has increased substantially and even exceeded the number of tourists from Ukraine and Iran. Visitors from Austria and Moldova increased 73% and 83% respectively.

Since the government removed the visa requirement for Russian citizens, the number of Russian visitors has increased. At the Larsi border crossing alone, the number of Russians entering Georgia has quadrupled. Visits from Russian citizens increased by 98% in April, compared to the same month last year.

Record number of visitors observed in Georgia in June
01.07.12
Georgia`s Interior Ministry has published the results of data on foreign visitors entering the state border of Georgia. The report has been prepared by the department of information and analysis of the ministry.
According to the statistics, in June of 2012, 390 808 visitors traveled to Georgia, what overtops the number of visitors by 72% for the same period of 2011 and substantially exceeds the most active period (August) of the past year. Therefore there is a pre-condition for this season to be “hot” in the direct as well as figurative sense. As for the first six months of the current year, the country has already been visited by 1 690 493 people and in the same period 53% increase in the number of visitors is observed.
In first six months of 2012 it has become a tradition that the majority of visitors entering Georgia were from the neighboring countries, among them Turkey (145%) and Ukraine (56%) should be outlined for the growing number of visitors not only in comparison with results of past year’s same period, but also to compare with results of previous month (14% and 41% respectively). Number of visitors has also increased from Russian Federation (100%) Armenia (35%) Azerbaijan (32%) and Iran (68%). Substantial growth of the number of travelers is also observed from EU states and even overtopped results of Ukraine and Iran. Citizens of Poland, Moldova and Austria have also been active with 46% 40% and 63% respectively.
Results showed that after imposing visa free regime for the citizens of Russia the number of Russian visitors has increased substantially, and this tendency is still preserved which can be proved by comparing current results (100% growth) with the same period of 2011. In June 2012 the index of average monthly growth has increased from 85% to 89% as a result of imposing visa free regime for the citizens of Russian Federation.
