The President of Georgia launches construction of new international airport
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili personally destroyed the old building of Kutaisi Airport, which is located in the town Kopitnari. Saakashvili dressed in ceremonial costume got a bulldozer and destroyed one of the walls of the old airport.
"We will build an international airport here, which will take the aircraft from Munich, Rome, Baku and other cities next year," he said.
According to Saakashvili, airline with low tariffs will be held for flights from Kutaisi.
"These companies will do everything not to allow other companies to set high prices," he said.
A Dutch company will build the airport.
The Georgian government announced about the expression of an interest for the purchase of LTD Kutaisi Airport for a symbolic price - 1 lari on March 18. As stated in the relevant official statement, "the government is ready to invite the companies to put forward their proposals for the maintenance of low-cost airlines. The company has to transport more than 20 million passengers a year. However, the Georgian government agrees to provide funding for the project if the company satisfies their requirements".
Expression of interest is not the nature of the tender or auction. So the Government of Georgia has the right not to accept any of the bids.

Alitalia to Start Service to Tbilisi

After long and efficient negotiations with Alitalia, TAV Georgia managed to convince Italy’s largest air carrier to start regular flights from Rome to Tbilisi in forthcoming summer season.
Italy’s largest and world’s 19th largest company is expected to operate at least 2 flights per week. Ticket prices are not certain yet, but shall be finalized within a few months.
With the fleet of 150 airplanes, Alitalia performs flights to 28 local and 62 international destinations in 41 countries worldwide and soon Georgia will be added to this list.

Speaking of the significance of the flight, TAV Georgia’s General Manager Mr. Mete Erkal said: “The direct Rome-Tbilisi flight will not only strengthen the trade-commercial ties between the two countries, but will also increase the possibility of Georgian travelers roam around many countries worldwide. Each new air company entering the Georgian air market is one more step ahead made toward the tourism development, what TAV Georgia always meets with delight and appreciation.”
Up to today the only way to travel to Italy for Georgians was via third countries.
Over the past year air companies Air Astana, China Southern Airlines, Ata Airlines, Taban Airlines, Ural Airways, Fly Dubai and Air Cairo had entered Georgian air market and Qatar Airways will start operations in February 2012. In the nearest future the list will be enriched with another famous air carrier- Alitalia.

Estonian Airlines introduces Tbilisi flights

Estonia’s national carrier, Estonian Air, will offer four weekly flights to Tbilisi beginning in the spring of 2012. Aiming to develop Tallinn into a regional hub, Estonian Air officials have decided to add new routes to Finland and one to Georgia.

“Estonian Air is aiming to attract different types of travelers, paying more attention to increase the share of transfer passengers,” said Tero Taskila, the CEO of Estonian Air on December 2.

The Estonian market is limited, so the air company felt the need to expand its market size. The airline, which is based in Tallin, is a regional airline feeding into the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) network. Officials from Estonian Air hope the decision will encourage more passengers to use the Estonian Air network and Tallinn Airport as a transfer.

Estonian Air offers direct flights from Tallinn to throughout Europe including Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris and Oslo.

“Estonian Air is now the only international and full-service carrier operating from those places that provides wide connectivity to Europe, Scandinavia and CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States),” Taskila said.

FlyGeorgia to take to the skies in 2012

A new, full-service, privately owned and controlled carrier will connect the capital Tbilisi to a number of destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Central and South Asia as well as the CIS in 2012.
Offering convenient schedules from the Georgian capital, the airline will deploy its modern, dual-type fleet to destinations such as London, Rome, Dusseldorf, Dubai and Delhi amongst many others. Preparations are well under way and the launch date will be confirmed and publicly announced shortly.
The airline’s multinational and experienced management will focus on providing quality services and market-demanded frequencies across the network, propelling FlyGeorgia into a formidable niche carrier segment that will link the continents via Tbilisi and provide convenient onward connections across its network.
One of the airline’s primary goals is to contribute to the admirable growth in both tourism and business arrivals to the country and therefore play an active role in Georgia’s future tourism and economic development.
Dubai-based tasc aviation has been contracted to assist in the airline’s launch, with efforts progressing rapidly in both Tbilisi and Dubai.
