Cycling gaining ground

The launch of a 4.5km designated lane from Tanjung Tokong to the Esplanade in George Town, Penang for cyclists and pedestrians will eventually lead to more routes linking all parts of the island.

Sourced from TheStar (Metro North) today

ps hope all these 'green' initiatives will be actively used by the general public maah !!!

I wish Malaysia is like Taiwan has an extensive motorcycle lane that bicycle can also use and sometimes get it own lanes too.

Need to improve intracity cycling infrastructure first then only think of intercity. If not cycling will be only perceived as a recreational means of transport.

Looking at this, seems like the most optimal bike lane is what KL mostly did with converting a car lane to a bike lane (the 6m upgrade), not the ones in penang where u need to share lane with cars (from the ones I saw in front of jetty).

So in order for safe bike lanes we require at least 3.5m of non-car space.

I rmb when Penang shifted the bike lanes to the pedestrian path they just eat away the existing pedestrian space, not expanding onto existing road. Wonder the situation has changed or not.
