Complete Durga temple flyover by Pushkaralu

http://www.thehansindia.com/posts/in...hkaralu-184896

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu here on Thursday asked the officials to complete the construction of flyover at Kanakadurga temple before Krishna Pushkaralu.
The Chief Minister held a review meeting with the officials and the contractor and wanted them to begin the works and complete the flyover ahead of the Pushkaralu.
Local MLC and senior Telugu Desam leader, Buddha Venkanna, who fought for the flyover at the temple to clear the traffic rush, thanked the Chief Minister for taking the initiative and getting clearances from the Central government for the flyover.
He recalled the dharna held in the city on June 25, 2012, for the flyover in which Chandrababu Naidu, as leader of Opposition in the Assembly participated. He said that the Telugu Desam had also promised the flyover in the election manifesto and had secured all clearances for the flyover.
The Central government had approved a budget of Rs 292 crore for the flyover, he added. The Chief Minister asked the officials to hold a review meeting with the contractor and ensure that the works commenced on time. He also asked the elected representatives to keep a regular watch on the works to ensure quick completion of the project.
Meanwhile, the elected representatives of the ruling party, including the legislators and the corporators from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation met in the city and resolved to ensure completion of the flyover construction at the earliest.
They also felt the need to hold a meeting with the contractor to speed up the process. The leaders said that they would hold another meeting with the residents of the area whose houses are to be evicted for the flyover.

VMC begins road widening works

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle7849263.ece

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has begun demolition of properties from K.L. Rao Headwater Works to Kummaripalem stretch as part of road widening works. The government is proposing to construct a flyover from Bhavanipuram to Rajiv Gandhi Park near the VMC to ease traffic congestion at Indrakeeladri.
Though there was no stiff resistance from the residents, a few were confused about their future as their petty shops were removed.
The government paid “hefty compensation” to the residents for parting their lands. The government paid as much as Rs. 53,000 per sq.yard to them. The residents, who lost more than 70 per cent of their land, were given a house at Jakkampudi and compensation also, said local Corporator Ummadi Venateswara Rao (Chanti).
VMC City Planner P. Pradeep Kumar said government properties had been demolished to kick-start the process. “Up to eight private buildings were removed. They were paid compensation. As many as 108 houses will have to be demolished as part of the road widening plans. It would take a week to complete the process,” he said.
Meanwhile, District Collector Babu A inspected the ongoing works. He asked Electricity Department officials to shift the electrical tower lines in coordination with the Irrigation Department. The shifting of lines should not affect the Prakasam Barrage, he said.
Mr. Babu said the VMC should take utmost care in shifting the drinking water pipelines. Tower lines and pipelines shfting and and demolition works should be taken up simultaneously, he said.
The government is contemplating completing the flyover construction before July next year to facilitate the smooth conduct of the Krishna Pushkaram, scheduled to commence on August 12 next year.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) opened tenders for the Kanaka Durga flyover project on Thursday. Though it was rumoured that infrastructure company Soma had bagged the contract, sources say the tenders are yet to be finalised.
According to information, Soma quoted Rs. 282 crore. The quotations of other contenders - L&T and Navayuga - are not known. MORTH is expected to issue a letter of acceptance (LOA) to the shortlisted bidder in a couple of days. MORTH will now study the tenders filed by the three bidders, sources say.
Meanwhile, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) said: “Soma Constructions bagged the contract. The firm quoted Rs. 282 crore for the project, and the works will commence shortly.” The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 447.8 crore. Of this, shifting of utilities like power towers and water pipelines will cost Rs. 114.5 crore. The remaining components, including flyover, will cost Rs. 333.12 crore. A bridge will be constructed near the Kanaka Durga temple gateway at a cost of Rs. 10.5 crore.
Excluding these heads, the flyover alone is estimated to cost Rs. 211 crore, sources say. The flyover will be constructed from from Bhavanipuram to Rajiv Gandhi Park near the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) office, and the existing road will be widened to make it four-lane.

After high-level reservoir, it is the turn of Ashoka pillar

Quote:
Sometimes, the development takes a toll on history. Two structures which have historical significance are apparently impacted by the developmental works in the city. An ancient high level water reservoir is faded into oblivion with the construction of a retaining wall atop Indrakeeladri.

The plaque, with the inscription ‘High Level Reservoir opened by Mahatma Gandhiji on 11th of April 1929’ used to be located in the vicinity of Arundal Satram (choultry) along the ghat road on Indrakeeladri facing river Krishna. The reservoir was demolished as part of retaining wall works.

The reservoir used to supply drinking water to residents of Arjuna Veedhi in the vicinity. The VMC urged Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam authorities to install bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the vicinity and preserve the plaque in 2008. But, it has not seen the light of day till date. Leave alone the statue, the whereabouts of the plaque is also not known.

Now, the works to demolish Ashoka Pillar began on Thursday as part of Kanaka Durga flyover project. The history and importance of this pillar is not known to many, including the authorities.

It is popular as Ashoka pillar because of the Lion Capital of Ashoka on top of it. The 60-foot pillar on which the Lion Capital of Ashoka was installed was actually the chimney of the old Public Works Department (PWD) workshop that existed there in the 1950s. The workshop was shifted to Seethanagaram just before or during the construction of Prakasam Barrage (then it was just called Krishna Barrage and was named after Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of a separate Andhra and the person who laid the foundation stone for the barrage much later). The chimney of the old PWD workshop was converted into Ashoka Pillar after the shifting of the workshopThe pillar stands as a sentinel at what was the sole entry point to the Bezawada town is a part of Andhra Pradesh heritage and should not be demolished to make way for Kanaka Durga flyover, feel experts and old-timers.

Flyover: installation of electricity towers begins

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle7907917.ece

Quote:
It is part of re-routing of Kanaka Durga Ghat section of the 132 KV line

The shifting of electricity towers by AP-Transco for construction of the Kanaka Durga flyover is going on at a brisk pace with erection of one of the five towers at the new regulator of Krishna eastern main canal nearing completion in three to four days. The laying of foundation and curing for the remaining towers has almost been completed.

Shifting of the towers is a part of the re-routing of Kanaka Durga Ghat section of the 132 KV DC line coming from Kondapalli for facilitating construction of the flyover proposed at Indrakeeladri.

The towers are multi-circuit high tensile steel towers replace three existing ones affected by alignment of 2.55 km-long elevated flyover that links Bhavanipuram with Seethammavari Padalu.

The flyover is going to be a part of the six-lane road that will connect NH5 and NH9 and it will have a four-lane road beneath it.

Each tower weighs about 25 tons and reaches a height of about 75 feet, according to official sources.

The tower that will be coming up on the Ghat Road near the entrance Gopuram at Indrakeeladri is the most critical one due to the rocky terrain and elevation.

Officials have exercised utmost caution to ensure that the foundations are laid properly so that they can bear the phenomenal weight of the towers.

The AP-Transco has sourced steel from Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and mobilised specialist workers from Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. AP-Transco MD K. Vijayanand has been informed of the progress and he instructed the officials to not compromise on quality of the project. It was estimated to cost nearly Rs. 9 crore.

Durga flyover foundation stone ceremony on Dec 5

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/49967484.cms

VIJAYWADA: The stage is set to formally lay the foundation stone for Durga flyover on December 5. Vijayawada member of parliament Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) said union transport minister Nitin Gadkari will attend the ceremony.
Giving details, the MP on Saturday said union minister Venkaiah Naidu along with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will also be present during the ceremony. "The works are taking place at brisk pace and the officials are keen on finishing the flyover before the Krishna Pushkarams commence," the MP said.
Soma Enterprise Limited and district officials, who had informally begun the works at Kummaripalem Centre on Nov 22, are taking up piling works for the piers. The roads have been closed at Indrakeeladri so as to facilitate the construction activities.
"We are trying to employ more machinery to complete the works at the earliest. We are planning to mobilise more drilling rigs so that we can take up pier works simultaneously," said an engineer from roads and buildings department.
At VMC office junction the vehicle underpass works have been underway, so have the four-laning work at Kanaka Durgamma Vaaradhi. "Once the formal foundation stone is laid, the work will be taken up in full swing divided in five phases. Already three phases have begun, the remaining two will begin in another ten days time," the official continued.
The 5.1-km four lane road of which the Durga flyover constitutes for 2.5 km is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 448 crores. The district collector Babu A is also conducting frequent inspections to expedite the process. He said that sophisticated equipment is being employed to ensure fast and efficient completion of the project.

448 crores is good amount of money. They should ensure proper aesthetics and comprehensive traffic management so that flyover on its own can solve traffic congestion for atleasr next 5-10 years and not get overwhelmed within a year or two.
