Göteborg: Inauguration of the mighty tunnel

Finally the tunnel under the southern dockside in Göteborg is ready! Here are some pictures from my walk through it as it was open for pedestrians this weekend only.

It's 1,6 km. It is located in the very center of Göteborg and it gives back the connection to the river. 3,2 billions SEK couldn't have been spent better. Just the value of the land that has been freed up must be huge.

Never heard about this project before! Exactly where is the tunnel situated?

From Lilla Bommen in the east to Järntorget in the west. Check out the picture below with the map. It also shows another kilometer of road to the east that has been remade above the ground.

Your question shows the negative side of building structures below ground. If you can't see it, you won't notice it! That's why I in general prefer bridges over tunnels.

And also I prefer houses over caves... In Göteborg they are building a multi salon cinema beneath the ground. I think it's so stupid. Why hide it away? Why not take the opportunity to make some fine architecture instead? A monument from our time to add to the other monuments that have been built over time and slowly have made our city grow bigger, bolder and (hopefully) more beautiful.

The initial idea was to locate the cinema deep into the rock under Götaplatsen where it would add to the ensemble of cultural institutions (art museum, theater, concert hall). There were no place for a house over the ground there. So the idea was logical and kind of cool. But now a lot of years later when the big cinema finally is being built the location has changed to a less central park and the building is partly above the ground. I recently read in the paper that the cinema company now wants to fence in the grass lawn on top of the roof so that people wont walk on it. Oh boy....They probably don't understand what was cool in the first place and now they have wasted a lot of money digging it down. Here is picture of it:
