DARWIN - #PROPOSED: Darwin Citygate - 17st / 54m / resi

A planning notice has been placed for this project. This is exactly what this end of Daly Street needs. It looks quite attractive with good street appeal.

From the November NT Business Review.

By NIGEL ADLAM

A plan to build a spectacular entrance gate to Darwin’s CBD has been resurrected.
Two 12-storey towers will sit on a five-storey podium on a triangle of land between Daly, Woods and Cashman Streets. The land used to be a motor service centre.

There will be 325 apartments, plus offices, shops and restaurants. A version of the $97 million Darwin City Gate project was first put forward in 2007 but was scuppered by the global financial crisis. Adelaide-based architect and developer Peter Villis said the development demonstrated his faith in the Territory’s future prosperity. ‘‘I’ve got great trust in the place,’’ he said. ‘‘My work will be centred there in future.’’ Building is expected to start in March and take 18 months.
The property is being marketed by the Ray White Central real estate agency.
Director Braden Menzies said Darwin City Gate would provide good, affordable housing on the edge of the city centre. He said the apartments would be ‘‘roomy’’ — 95sq m for the one bedroom and 118sq m for two bedroom. Starting price is $385,000. ‘‘When you compare that price with other prices in Darwin, you’ll see it’s very good value.’’

I will be there in July, so I hope they have started it by then!

This looks like a scaled down version of the tower development proposed a couple of years ago for a 200m & 150m with the sky bridge....

Can't find the image, but this one that Cul drew a few years back shows it has the similar curves and it was for the same site and the name was also the same.

So around 60m~ ? And it'll be fairly imposing since it's 2 towers (or is it 3?)

Two 12 storey towers on a 5 storey podium. An enormous project for this location.

In the March NT Business Review the developer Peter Villis said that construction will commence in the dry season of 2013 and take 18 months to complete at $97m.

This is great news for Darwin, as that end of town is a bit ratty, with vacant lots and derelict buildings.

The vacant lot in the foreground with some old sheds and buildings is the site for this exciting project. Those last renders from Skyline Art were delicious!

Heh I lived in that white/gray building for a couple months in 2009. Hidious ugly thing it is, would easily survive a nuclear attack. Plus, it's haunted aswell... but that's for another thread.

This proposal is simply amazing and probably the best mid-rise proposal I have in seen in quite a while. It has glass, curves, style and the podium is sensational. Another plus, is it will extend the CBD further out with a new supermarket and retail outlets. Well done Darwin, now please build it.

Cant believe I missed this thread.

This is great and very welcome. might be a bit odd if they build another "Gateway" in front of it, across the road.

On the contrary they will most definately compliment each other as they will be either side of Daly Street, Gateway on the left going into the city and then crossing McMinn Street Citygate on the right.

These type of developments are sorely needed at the entrance to Darwin City which looks very drab and unkempt.

DARWIN CITYGATE is going on the old Ford site. GATEWAY is going next to the Daly Street bridge on the other side of Daly Street. So as you come round the bend from Stuart Park you will be met by GATEWAY first on the left and then by CITYGATE a bit further along on the right.

Having 2 reasonably sized buildings either side of Daly Street at the entrance to the CBD will be great.

The next eyesore that needs developing is directly across Daly Street from CITYGATE and opposite GATEWAY from McMinn Street.

Here's an idea. If the other site gets developed, why not call it CITYGATEWAY to avoid any confusion....
