'Linton Street' has the major stormwater drains under it that serve the suburbs to the east of Casuarina Shopping Square. Linton Street itself is a floodway should the drains below not cope. All of it drains to the large open drains at the nearby Charles Darwin University.

GPT had been advised of this.

I hope the designers have designed for that otherwise there's going to be some expensive redesigning reqiured...

the 8 floor student accommodation building is underway. no much at the moment a little bit of earthworks and the requisite fence.

Also

4800 unit solar panel array for the roof. expect to supply 20% of the centres energy at full capacity.

Media Release for that student accomodation.

Looks like this project will be completed and ready to take in the start of the student intake of the 2015 university year.

OMG, I had no idea but... that looks like a tight spot. Right up against the end of the shopping mall and the main road.

Is the site extending right between (is that in between a service loading dock - left) and ( a service station on the right side? With the Coles Service dock immediately to the north? I can make out Coles on the right side of the bldg .

The shopping mall is really getting it's own form of density within.

in other news. it appears they are starting on the development of the 3 level carpark and litchfield sq part of things.

that carpark is 3 levels, level 2 extends beyond level 3 which you can see in the photo. that bit has been fenced off and there was a concrete cutter in there today.

Fasta Pasta has also closed and been stripped. The Cheescake shop has a sign that it will be closed as of 1/1/15. after that i suspect a d10 will take to the building they are in.

supposedly it will look like this when finished.

fasta pasta and the cheesecake shop started about the traffic lights and go right

The student accommodation block at Casuarina Square is causing a bit of a stir. Many people calling it the ugliest building in Darwin!!

Not the prettiest looking structure I agree, but it is not finished yet so maybe it will improve a little. But if not, it would be easy to demolish - just a large spanner and a crane would do for most of it!

For starters why the yellow?

Yellow on any building or structure other than a pole I believe is instantly associated with ugly.

Even the Maccas sign is kind of ugly.

If the green is just protective film and will be taken off then it should look okay. Still ugly but far better than it does in that pic.

Not dissimilar to a lot of budget self service motel buildings which are quite prevalent overseas. None have any architectural merit, as they are what they are.

Yet developments like these can start to repair the damage done to streetscapes by the big shopping malls.

The building creates an active frontage to the streetscape and provides convenience to amenities, meaning its residents don't need to drive to the centre in order to shop there and also inject some life to the area, even when the shops are closed.

Update

I noticed no one had posted on here for a while so here's a couple pics of what has happened in the last year or so.

Source: https://www.casuarinasquare.com.au

The Quarter (al fresco dining and entertainment)

Has all your typical outdoor dining places you see popping up in similar developments like Grill'd, Nandos Hogs Breath etc and a Timezone Arcade.

Food Court Upgrade

Nothing too exciting, just a lot of wood/bamboo things and fake plants
