So awesome to see Darwin joining the club. Australia is strangely lacking a northern city.

NT - General Projects & Discussion

Another homemaker centre under construction this one close to the Berrimah Farm/Northcrest development. https://homezonedarwin.com.au/

The first stage of the Gateway Homemaker centre is also nearing completion in Palmerston. Guessing there must be some demand for these centres with the residential developments in the area

A Mt Isa to Tennant Creek railway has been talked about for some time but I hadn't realised that the project is or has been put on the interwebs.

Quote:

Mount Isa to Tennant Creek Railway Project

The Mount Isa to Tennant Creek Railway Project aims to link the existing Tarcoola to Darwin railway with the Great Northern Line operating from Mount Isa to Townsville.

The Northern Territory (NT) Government considers a rail link connecting the NT to north-western Queensland as critical for regional and national economic development and the creation of regional employment opportunities.

The project would provide rail connectivity between the Port of Townsville and the Port of Darwin. It is expected to leverage the potential development of phosphate, agriculture, gas/liquids and other mineral exports along the rail corridor.

The Port of Darwin currently possesses excellent rail and road access and capabilities to handle both bulk and container freight.

The project would also provide additional rail connectivity into the Mount Isa region to support existing and potential mining and processing opportunities. General freight between the NT and Queensland would also be able to move to rail and reduce the impact of heavy vehicles on the interstate road network.

The NT, Queensland and Australian governments are investigating the project to understand the economic, commercial, technical, environmental and engineering requirements that will need to be addressed as part of any future development of the railway as part of the Darwin to Townsville transport corridor.

The Mount Isa to Tennant Creek Railway is expected to deliver significant economic benefit, including:
  • solidifying rail links between Darwin and the east coast
  • increasing commodity exports out of the NT
  • increasing general freight between the NT and Queensland
  • enhancing regional development in the Tennant Creek and Mount Isa surrounds.

I had no idea what this was until i googled the name:

Paulaner Bräuhaus restaurants are at home all over the world. Whether in Munich, Shanghai, Moscow or Singapore, they have developed into solid institutions worldwide. With their micro breweries and very own Paulaner brewmasters, Paulaner Bräuhaus restaurants offer a unique combination of Bavarian tradition and Munich lifestyle with the Paulaner brand. A prominent eye-catching feature among the Bräuhaus locations are the copper brewing kettles with their glowing pipes and fittings. We’re happy to welcome you in any of our locations!

Wow "Asia and Oceania" has 24 locations, with 22 of them being located in China.. hmmn maybe i have been to one of them before as when i was living in China for six months i had eaten in a quite a few different unique famous (international) restaurants. Some with quirky and interesting with even their on site microbrewering.

So Darwin, Australia will be the first one outside of Asia/Oceania.

Apologies PP, this is a continuation of my dreaming for what I wish to see in Darwin, not what is likely to happen unfortunately.
If I was a better brewer, a better cook and had plenty of disposable capital - perhaps maybe I would develop a clone!

My dreams in this space, also include MRT/BTS/MTR style light rail connecting the City with Casuarina, The International Airport, Casino/Mindil Beach and Palmerston - equally unlikely to happen.

WESTIN DARWIN HOTEL PROGRESSES

February 21, 2018

Landbridge invites community to view the progressed design of the proposed Westin Darwin Hotel.

The Westin Darwin Hotel is continuing to progress, and Landbridge has been working in collaboration with the Northern Territory Government to deliver this iconic project.

The project will deliver a gateway for travellers to the Top End providing economic and employment opportunities as well as a connected and activated precinct for the residents of Darwin.

The design includes:

An uninterrupted public access walkway connecting Jervois Park to the Waterfront and enabling a continual walking and cycling path to Stokes Hill Wharf

Connections between the Waterfront precinct and the city through a skywalk from the Esplanade, offering direct public access to the precinct and to the Hotel’s iconic rooftop restaurant and bar where patrons will be able to enjoy the view over the Darwin waterfront

Lush, tropical landscaped grounds that celebrate the unique Northern Territory environment

Extensive use of passive design features tuned to Darwin’s climate, with integrated passive energy control elements like verandas, colonnades, breezeways and screens.

As a result of this work, Landbridge invites interested community members to come down and chat to the project team about the design and view concept images of the hotel.

“We’re holding two community information sessions which we invite community and industry alike to attend, we’ll have project team members on hand to talk through the design with images of the hotel, residential tower and the skywalk.” said Andy Payne, Project Director, Landbridge.

Community information sessions are on Saturday 3 March 2018 between 10am and 2pm and Monday 5 March between 5:30 pm and 7:30pm at the Charles Darwin University Waterfront Campus on Kitchener Drive.

Following the community information sessions the project team and Landbridge will look to lodge relevant planning and development applications with the aim for development approval by the end of May 2018.

If approved, construction is expected to begin third quarter 2018 for completion in late 2020 with the opening of the hotel to guests in 2021.

The NT news have more images and it looks like this hotel is very long with the roof top looking quite fancy.

The NT news has exclusive coverage to the story so far. Only problem is you need to be a subscriber to the NT news to read the online version.

I noticed this when in Palmerston this morning, so definitely some big ideas for the eventual built form of the CBD:

Newest airliner to Darwin

Quote:

NT’s newest international airline, Donghai Airlines, touches down in Darwin

GARY SHIPWAY, NT News
May 30, 2018 3:10pm

UPDATE: The Top End’s links with China have taken a historic leap forward with the maiden Donghai Airlines flight from Shenzhen touching down in Darwin.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner, Northern Territory Airports CEO Ian Kew and the Chung Wah Society Lion Dance Troupe this morning welcomed Donghai Airlines President Mr Yang Jianhong to Darwin.

Twitter video 1 link in source

Mr Gunner said this was a milestone moment for Territory tourism.

“We have invested an additional $103 million to turbocharge tourism and the arrival of our first non-stop direct flight from China heralds a step-change in our international competitiveness,” Mr Gunner said.

“The Territory Labor Government fought hard to secure this new route because we know the positive impact it will have on Territory tourism and job creation.

The first historic direct flights from Shenzhen China to Darwin had Donghai Airlines hostesses dancing for joy and they were only too happy to show everyone just how much at a spectacular launch at Shenzhen International airport on Tuesday

“The new route is anticipated to bring thousands of new Chinese visitors to the Territory, and has the potential to deliver $32 million in new visitor expenditure each year, once the route reaches three flights per week at 80 per cent capacity.”

EARLIER: Tourism Minister Lauren Moss has piloted a historic new course for the Territory with Darwin’s first direct flight from China.

Donghai Airlines’ twice weekly service from Shenzhen to Darwin has officially started and will land this morning.

The Top End’s links with China have taken a historic leap forward with the maiden Donghai Airlines flight from Shenzhen

Flight DZ 6223 was wheels down on the tarmac at Darwin International Airport with Ms Moss behind the controls … well almost.

Before Tuesday’s departure from Shenzhen, Ms Moss got to see first hand the view Donghai pilots have been training for from the airline’s multimillion-dollar new flight simulator.

[Twitter video 4 in source]

She even got the chance to test her pilot skills with a circle of both Shenzhen and Darwin.

Donghai DZ6223, carrying Ms Moss, Donghai Airlines chief executive Yang Jianhong and a full plane load of VIPs and first flight tourists, heralds a new beginning.

It may have taken many years of hard work by the Territory Government, bureaucrats and key industry stakeholders to get the Territory to this historic point, but the real China mission is only just beginning.

Neither Ms Moss nor Donghai chief executive Mr Jianhong are under any illusions about the challenge to make the Shenzhen-Darwin route succeed.

“There are 18 million people in Shenzhen and tapping into them and others beyond is what lays ahead,” Ms Moss said.

“I’ve said all along our goal is 30,000 by 2020 and from discussions I had while in Shenzhen I am confident we can achieve it.”

For his part Donghai’s Mr Jianhong is not only proud of Donghai’s first Australian port, but he is confident he has climbed aboard the right destination for just his airline’s third international port.

Thailand and Vietnam were its first international services a few short months ago and now Darwin is number three.

Those charged with selling Darwin to Chinese tourists are also excited to have our capital as a short-haul destination.

“Australia is seen as a long-haul destination in the minds of Chinese travellers because of the time it takes to get to east coast cities,” they said during a meeting with Ms Moss in Shenzhen.

“Darwin can change that … it is just five-and-a-half hours away.

Donghai Airlines first flights to the Territory will arrive on Wednesday

“Time is important to them.

“Rather than the current Perth to Uluru models we now have Darwin.

“The benefit of Donghai is that it has many China links and Shenzhen has many international links.”

Darwin Water Theme Park

Proposed site is adjacent to the Waterfront Precinct...

Quote:
NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES EOI FOR DARWIN WATERPARK

MAY 22, 2018
ATTRACTIONS / TENDERS / TOURISM / WATERPARKS
The Northern Territory Government has released a preferred site nominated and Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the development of major waterpark in central Darwin.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the water theme park will be a world-class tourist attraction that unlocks further private investment and is great fun for locals.

Pico Play, who were engaged by Government to do a detailed business case for the water theme park late last year, found it to be commercially attractive for a private sector investor to build, own and operate.

The Northern Territory Government will now seek EOI's from developers and has nominated a site option in Darwin’s Stokes Hill Wharf area.

Announcing the next step in the project, Chief Minister Gunner advised “my Government’s number priority is creating local jobs and facilitating exciting private sector projects like this water theme park will do that.

“This was highlighted during our Economic Summits and this is why we must continue to leverage private sector investment.

“Done well, an international standard water theme park will encourage tourists to visit the Territory and stay longer, as well as improve the liveability of Darwin for locals.”

Chief Minister Gunner said the Darwin waterpark is part of a comprehensive $100 million plan to revitalise Darwin CBD advising that he is talks with the Federal Government to match this funding in a Cities Deal is progressing well.

He added “we are not waiting – we are getting on with revitalising Darwin CBD. By investing in social and tourism infrastructure we will grow the Territory’s population, boosting the economy and creating jobs “The Darwin water theme park is another piece of our wider plans to boost our business and tourism assets while creating substantial employment opportunities for locals.

“This new development on the Stokes Hill Waterfront will improve the existing waterfront precinct, which is another project delivered by a Labor Government.”

The EOI outlines that the attraction could include: entertainment precincts; public open space; recreational activities; accommodation options; food and retail outlets; and other unique offerings or ideas put forward by the successful proponent.

The development will also include public walkways proving uninterrupted public foreshore access.

Chief Minister Gunner also advised that the Northern Territory Government invested $500,000 in Budget 2017 for the feasibility study, and is allocating an additional $1.725 million in 2018/19 to support the delivery of the project through a competitive process.

The EOI will close on 22nd August 2018.

New Cavenagh House

NTG spending some money in the CBD...

Quote:
Creating 250 Jobs and revitalising the Darwin CBD
09 January 2018

Front view of the Cavenagh House building design

The old Cavenagh House building will be demolished and replaced by a striking ‘green’ nine-storey office tower, which will create 250 construction jobs and will become the new administrative headquarters for the Department of Health with 660 government staff to be based there.

The proposal features substantial CBD activation measures that will deliver broader benefits to the community and contribute to revitalising the Darwin CBD including:
  • greening the exterior of Energy House and improving the building’s façade
  • a childcare centre on the ground floor of Energy House
  • a capital contribution to the City of Darwin to upgrade and green Litchfield Street
  • a new 320 bay public car park in Litchfield Street (costing $12 million).

The project was one part of a broader job-creating proposal following a public tender for 10,000 square metres of office accommodation in the CBD for a long-term Government lease.

The architecture will be suited to Darwin’s tropical environment, featuring an internal atrium, high energy efficiency with a minimum 5-Star rating, a rooftop garden and shading and greening at street level which will help reduce heat loads in this part of the CBD.

The new building, along with the other activation measures offered by Sandran, will refresh and breathe life into an underused part of the CBD, creating a Cavenagh Street/Litchfield Street precinct.

The planned developments will complement the Government’s efforts to reduce heat in Cavenagh Street and encourage locals and visitors to the area.

Sandran Pty Ltd has been selected as the preferred tenderer after an extensive assessment process, including input from a number of subject matter experts and oversight by an independent probity advisor.

Sandran will pay for the construction of the project, while the government will pay for lease once constructed. Sandran has also committed to using 95% local contractors and suppliers on the projects and both the car park and childcare centre will be locally managed and operated.

Work on the project will get underway early in 2018 with construction expected to be completed by 2021.

So they are going to demolish this building: is it the same as the old cavenagh house?

"A new living and learning campus for Charles Darwin University will be built at the end of Garramilla Boulevard, on the site of the post office carpark."

I presume this is Barneson Boulevard, carpark next to the current Cavenagh street GPO.
