6 cranes visible at CBD South. I'm standing next to the Global Switch crane, so that makes 7 !
2 for the Quay, then 180 Thomas (will that be coming down soon?), the Gehry, orange one is Powerhouse Museum refurb? Have no idea about that, crane been up for months, gave me a fright when I first saw it!
And far right, the Mark.

Will get to that crane count Culwulla, a great idea, haven't seen one of them for ages.

Heard a rumour that Australia's biggest crawler crane was going to be taking down an old railway bridge at Lidcombe after Christmas.
Friends said they were unaware of any old bridge at Lidcombe. So I went out to find the bridge.
Found the crane !

OLYMPIC DRIVE TO CLOSE IN LIDCOMBE FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT:

Motorists and public transport passengers are urged to plan ahead as Olympic Drive will be closed for six days in December, to allow for the replacement of the railway bridge in Lidcombe.

“The replacement is taking place to improve the safety and reliability of the bridge, and to increase the height clearance from 4.5 metres to 5.3 metres,” a Transport Management Spokesperson said.

As a result, Olympic Drive will be closed between Boorea Street and Vaughan Street in Lidcombe from 1am Thursday 26 December up until 10am Tuesday 31 December.

Additionally, no trains will be able to operate on the railway bridge while it is replaced, affecting the T1 North Shore, Northern & Western, T2 Airport, Inner West & South, T6 Carlingford, and Blue Mountains lines.

Higher clearance will stop this happening again at Lidcombe bridge!!!

thanks upwards

Yeah this is pretty massive. They've laid the concrete for the new bridge under the old bridge, then they simply lift the old one up and dump the new one on. Lol! The bridge currently has two tracks of trains running pretty constantly on top, and four lanes I think of pretty constant traffic running underneath.

Bridge has gone! Apparently went between midnight and dawn on 27-12-13.
And when I mean 'went' I mean gone to the tip. No sign of it.

From Anzac Bridge. On left, Broadway. On right, Redfern.
Cranes: the Mark, Engineering Bldg., two on Wattle Street. Far right Urba.
Two low ones in centre Erko? Or from the Green Park thread?
Perhaps more interesting as historical density.
From c1978 til about two years ago, all you had on left was UTS Tower and Ex-Fairfax Bldg.
And on right, the Redfern twin towers and the resi behind them from this angle.

Boomtown: cranes crowd the Sydney skyline as construction takes off
A spider-web of cranes on the Barangaroo site / Picture: Gregg PorteousSource: News Limited

WELCOME to Sydney, the building capital of Australia.

crane count
sydney 139
brisbane 69
melbourne 43
perth 29
adelaide 6

After more than a decade in the wilderness, the local construction industry is now in the midst of a boom not seen since pre-Olympics, with billions invested in new and existing properties around the state.

The near-record amounts of spending have led to Australia's sixth-richest man, billionaire Harry Triguboff, to declare the boom was the biggest he'd witnessed in almost three decades.

Mr Triguboff, the chairman and managing director of Meriton Apartments, is Australia's biggest residential property developer - laying claim to building more than 50,000 houses and units since establishing the company in 1963. "For many, many years, we have underbuilt in Sydney. So now we are catching up to pent-up demand," Mr Triguboff told The Daily Telegraph.

Multi-billion-dollar redevelopment approvals including Sydney convention centre, Barangaroo and parts of Darling Harbour have also seen crane levels across Sydney's skyline soar.

New figures from Rider Levett Bucknall reveal Sydney's "crane index" - the measure of highlighting a city's construction strength by recording its daily crane activity - are now the highest in the country, nearly doubling those of the nearest competitor capital, Brisbane.

Over the past six months, the total number of construction cranes in Sydney grew by 27 per cent, with Brisbane booking a 15 per cent rise and Melbourne only 7 per cent.

Major developers including Lend Lease, Mirvac, Macquarie Bank and AMP Capital have spent a combined $804 million in the last two years on inner city real estate and will put up more cash to develop sites.

Mr Triguboff, worth an estimated $4.5 billion, said the improvement in Sydney was because interest rates had dropped and people started at last to make some profit on their old purchases.

As of December, the state government had approved more than 350 major projects since March 2011, with a total capital investment value of more than $39.6 billion.

Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics figures have shown the house-building sub-index for NSW - the best measure of a state's construction performance - rose 1.5 points to 63.5, and is sitting just off an eight-year peak reached in October.

Lend Lease is in consultation with Sydney City Council about redevelopments for three sites in the CBD at 174 and 182 George Street and at 33 Pitt Street.

The company wants to build a $1 billion office development directly facing Circular Quay

Within 500m of my place in Zetland (Green Square, Sydney), there are 15 cranes operating - I can see 12 of them from my balconies.

Not a place for quiet reflection and contemplation at the moment!

There must be several at Mascot and Wolli Crk/DiscoPt. though they are getting close to 10km from CBD.
