recent pics of Columbia

let the boom keep rolling; i was in for a few hours over the break to do paperwork, so i got some pics of my old home.

residential infill

Barringer Building, conversion to lofts

newest tower, First Citizens; a little short, but very nice

this lot demands "build tall on me!!!"

guess how old the low rise is?

USC's new hotel, which incorporates two old apartment buidings into it (and is very nice from what i've heard at work)

new school of health

all that's left of the Heart of Columbia Motel

a casualty of urban renewal...the implosion's set for Feb. 5 (to be replaced by part 2 of the school of health and a research campus; i'll miss the dishes on top)

Olympia/Granby Mills - conversion's almost done; this area'll be great in 5 years, even better in 15 when the quarry in the hood closes and is turned into a pond

baby got back

supposedly this oldy won't live another year; the owner supposedly hasn't kept it up to code

nearby houses in Olympia

infill

Whaley's Mill, converted to apartments for about a decade now

parting shot

Good shots, LSyd! I especially liked this one of the Palmetto Building (which is being converted into a 5-star Sheraton):

The lot where the old Heart of Columbia stood and the one on which the Carolina Plaza is being razed will serve as an awesome entrance to Innovista. I can't wait for something to get built on the lots directly east of the Colonial Center and west of the Carolina Coliseum (which, sadly, will eventually be razed--but for a good purpose).

^ oh, the Coliseum's going? that's depressing...i spent so many hours in there for journalism, and breaks among its brutalist columns, and graduation...but it'll be nice for the j-school to not be in an isolated bunker (i hated that part, but had a friend from school of music to get lunch with.)

so what's gonna replace it?

there used to be cool old warehouses and industrial buildings next to the Colonial Center; you can sorta see them in "The Program," the scene by the train tracks. me and one of my friends wandered into their freshman year. too bad i didn't have my camera, and my shots of the demolition really didn't come out.

I think the Coliseum is set to be razed sometime around 2007-2008, shortly after the Inferno finishes its last season there; the team is building a new arena in Lexington County near the airport. That spot will eventually be incorporated into the new research campus. I'll miss it, but it will give way to something greater.

Nice pictures, LSyd; you'll be happy to know that the old Olympia Communiy Center has been saved by a Five Points restauranteur. I don't believe the plans have been announced for the building, but at least it will be repaired and not torn down.
