Lake Buena Vista (WOFL) - One person is dead after 2 monorail trains collide at Disney World. It happened around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Bo Jones, Deputy Chief of Operations for Reedy Creek Fire Department tells Fox News "Two trains collided at the ticket and transportation center. One driver on one train is dead and the other driver from the second train was taken to the hospital, but didn't appear to have any injuries. Five guests and two employees were on the trains, but were not injured."

Mike Griffin, Walt Disney World Vice President of Public Affairs released this statement:
"Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow Cast Member. Our hearts go out to his family and to those who have lost a friend and co-worker. The safety of our guests and Cast Members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service as we continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps."

According to Disney Fact Sheets, Disney has 12 monorail trains, each with 6 cars traveling the 14.7 miles of elevated rail throughout Disney property.

Nearly 7,000 guests per direction, per hour ride the monorail. On a typical day, more than 150,000 guests utilize monorail transportation.

Ethan Meus, who was visiting the theme park from Dubuque, Iowa, said he and his family took the monorail to dinner at a resort hotel Saturday night. Meus, 17, watched the Magic Kingdom fireworks
from the monorail on the way back to his hotel, he said, and didn't notice any problems with the train.
"It's pretty shocking to hear that a driver was killed in that accident," Meus said.

The family was planning to take the train again Sunday to visit Disney's Epcot Center, but now planned to take a bus, Meus added. "You would think it would be so safe," said 20-year-old Lauren
Shoebottom, who was visiting the park from London. "You don't expect it on holiday, do you?"

"It's a bit shocking," said 22-year-old Danielle Williams, of London. "Disney seems so perfect."

I hear of monorail crashes on the system, but never a fatal one. This is truly sad.

On another note, a website devoted to the WDW monorail system has been closed til further notice. http://www.monorailyellow.com

I'm hearing as of last night that the NTSB is going to get involved, a first for them in this type of situation since Disney is private property. However, since the monorail is considered public transport, the NTSB is jumping in on this one.

There were lots of deadly monorail accident at Disney.

According to a 1985 Time magazine article, fewer than 100 lawsuits are filed against Disney each year for various incidents.

On June 26, 2007, a 14-year-old girl lost consciousness on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Paramedics attempted to revive her, but she died before the ambulance arrived. A ride inspection showed no mechanical problems.

On July 29, 2005, 25 guests were injured when one train crashed into another, with 15 guests being taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. An investigation showed that a faulty brake valve, installed a few days earlier by Disney, was the cause.

well, too bad, b/c my next point is that WDW should expand the Monorail system to link with the HSR station on their property. If there's controversy regarding safety, then maybe that will be the last thing they consider doing.

Yeah, the way things are now. It is kind of hard to see any such monorail expansion in the distant future.
