GELSENKIRCHEN - Veltins Arena (62,271)

FC Schalke 04

7x Champion:
1934, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1940,
1942, 1958

5x Cup Winner:
1937, 1972, 2001, 2002, 2011

1x Supercup:
2011

1x UEFA Europe League:
1997

I guess this is one of a kind. Biathlon in a football stadium. Since a few years a Biathlon competition is held successfully in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. This year it was sold out with 52,000 people.

Areal view:

I found some nice pictures:

So how long is the skiing course? If they are coming in to the stadium there must be a bit outside somewhere?

You can see a bit of the course in the very first picture. One round is 1264 meters. I also found an outdoor picture that I put into my first post and this:

Snow is brought from an indoor ski-arena in Neuss.

GELSENKIRCHEN - Veltins Arena (61,673)

Concert

Biathlon

Stock Car

Maybe the arena will host the opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship. The capacity would be 78,000 (new world record)

How are they going to get 78.000 into the Arena? Where will the extra seats be?

According to stadionwelt.de the interior of the stadium could be increased to create enough space for the extra seating

I really love this stadium.,,it is big enough, great sidelines, the retractable roof, THE TERRACE, a great example of how a modern, safe stadium can still get a terrace for the real fans.

only the outside is not that good but does the job.

my only question is why there are so many entrance or access gates ( of whatever is called) on the upper deck, seems excessive for a tier that is not that big. a lot of seats could be added. the lower tier is bigger and has only one row of entrace gates....

in a fast estimate, each gate, takes about 77 seats,,, that multiplied by 40 gates all around, gives you 3080 seats.

There are to many entrances.
I counted 650 seats for each gate and multiplied by 40 gives a total capacity of 26000 on the second tier...so 3080 isn't that much.

There are 2 different price ranges for each exit, so maybe better facilities as well as an improved view.

Here is a picture of the world record crowd for a team handball game in the match between THW Kiel and TBV Lemgo in 2004 with 30,925 spectators

Very beautiful stadium. One of my favorite stadiums in Europe. I just wish that they would put seats in those standing rows areas. It would look much better if all the sections were filed in with the blue seats.

It can be done, and as I remember seats cover those terrace areas, during UEFA, or international matches, also during the 2006 World Cup.

Still i think is more of a blessing to have standing areas in a stadium, is better for the athmosphere and fans wallets

absolutely right. i am strictly against all-seater stadiums. but for the look, they could maybe paint the terraces in blue

here as an example, terraces in offenbach (in the background. relegated to 3rd league now):
