Huh, I don't get how anyone could suggest cement rendering an art deco gem like this. It's meant to have bricks showing because that is part of what it is. And what is all this facination with glass that some people go on about? Shit, in a couple of decades time we will all look back and wonder what were we thinking with all this monotonous glass sameness that has gone up everywhere, just like looking back to the 80's and wondering why people would have had frizzy fringes and permed mullets. Glass can no doubt be pretty but everywhere really? Give me some form please!

Some of us actually like late 80s and early 90s design. It is certainly my favourite era for industrial design and architecture. Post Modernism might bastardise styles but it has its own inherent pleasures.

All glass boxes certainly don't look the same. People that hate glass curtain wall buildings and say they look alike are just like those that can't understand techno and the nuances of difference.

^i think new facade?

does anyone remember way back when Rialto was about to start and Meriton had to save and relocate the historic 1904 stone facade of the existing YMCA bldg on bathurst st?
The Loftus tram museum bought it and reerected it as part of there new complex.
pic from 2005
looks like they still have to complete the new bldg but facade is firmly done. looks good way out in sutho.

A 70s horror on Sussex is going to be gutted and a couple of floors added. A crane was being lodged today. I think the address is 491 or 493 Sussex.

Well yes but who wouldn't be? What the hell is the point of them even recladding it if they are keeping the concrete louvres?? If they just give it a nice, simple curtain wall then it would look fine and modern for at least another 10 years. Far out Sydney is way too far behind..

^ thanks cul. pity it's not a full rebuild but i'm guessing a new building in that spot would not be allowed to be as tall (20s/81m) hence refurb yeah?

It's one of the most horrid areas of town and this one leads to Museum Station.

here are some photographed renders
i like the timber and glass look. really fixes up current boring situation.
i think main reason for this new enclosed podium is because of dark/windy condtions at street level in and around this bldg.
not very inviting.
