Sirius building to be refurbished as NSW government nets $150 million in sell-off

The brutalist Sirius building in The Rocks will be preserved as apartments, with the NSW government netting $150 million for its sale to developers who will refurbish and modernise it.

In news that will be welcomed by fans of the building, new owners Australian investment firm JDH Capital have promised to work with the community to "acknowledge and celebrate Sirius' rich history".

Sirius Developments Pty Ltd, which is owned and backed by the Australian investment firm JDH Capital, were announced on Friday as the successful bidders following an international competitive tender process.

A spokesman for JDH Capital said the company was aware the building "held a special place in the heart of so many Sydneysiders".

"We have assembled an all-Australian, first-rate team of architects, planners, heritage consultants and builders to ensure Sirius is more sensitive to the character of The Rocks while retaining the building's iconic features," the spokesman said.

"Once complete, we believe that the revitalised Sirius will be a building that all of Sydney can be proud of."

The concept design proposed by the firm centres on refurbishing the existing building to deliver 89 apartments, as well as retail and commercial spaces on Cumberland Street and on Gloucester Walk.

We need to be "mindful" that the above is merely a concept sketch and no plans or designs have been made.

Of course, but if it ends up looking something like that, I think it will be a good outcome.

Bit of a strange 'restoration' It looks nothing like the existing building. Nothing wrong with the design but it's a bit rich claiming that the buildings being restored.
