The thing is in Walsall, they have done that much construction in & around the waterfront development, the town been weighed down on that side so much so it's tipped all the shoppers down to that side of the town.
Hopefully now they have realised the have killed half the town off , they are belatedly putting their efforts in & around the Old Square/Primark to bring people back. Back in the day all around the Market, you could not get a parking place for love or money, now it's pick your spot.

I went up Walsall on Saturday to have a nosey around. Went in Debenhams, to see what ours in Wolvo will be like. Good god, I've never stepped into a more depressing store. The ceilings feel about 6 foot high, the interior is drab and dark, and there is nothing I'd really expect of a Debenhams in there. If anything it feels like an old, old Primark!

So I'm worried for ours, as it will have similarly low ceilings. I'd rather hope it is more like Merry Hill or Birmingham's.

As for Walsall, a commenter on E&S reckoned they should demolish Park Place and build a Debenhams there, turning Old Square shopping centre into a car park for Primark. It would make a lot of sense, both centres are completely empty. New Look and Wilkinson could stay even, just having the middle part as Debenhams.

I'd say no, that would draw people up the good end of town and away from Digbeth, but Debenhams is seriously no draw in its current state anyway. It's also tiny.

Final suggestion would be to link Crown Wharf to the High Street properly. There are some good buildings there split up by weird roads and service yards. Maybe even demolish Poundland and build a new link of buildings. You should flow from one to the other, so that they act as one town and not as an out of town retail park and a struggling town. H&M, River Island, Starbucks - they should be on Walsall High Street essentially.

Well there's the Car Park attached to Debenhams which you enter via Freer Street, so there's quite a good car park near by for Primark & also 2 levels on the Asda Car park, so Primark served quite well with out knocking things down. I think Primark might help Debenhams to get some more foot fall, but to me it's not Debenhams fault, it's the Old Square owners who have left the place drift into a ghost town.

I dislike how the The Crown Wharf flows into the Top of Parks Street & vice versa. a Stranger walking up Park Street might think that once they get to Poundland, see nothing else & walk back down

Thanks for the render DBadger .

It does look better than the first images we had.I really want this to be successsful but when you look at it,it could belong to the uninspiring Crown Wharf shopping área.

Will be the same king of thing. It could work though in a way... People love retail parks, and here they can walk down a high street between two of them, perhaps waltzing into shops they never would have before.

No progress on Old Square at all.

St Matthew's is gathering pace. Massive plot.

Also this is flying up at the end of the High Street.

I can't believe how long it taking to build the Hole in the Wall development. Although everything does seem to take an eternity to get built in Walsall. We are certainly in our own time zone here

Getting away from Park Street / High Street in Walsall today I went around Lower Hall Lane and saw something being built called The Quarter (assume that this is the right thread).

This corner will be Poundland and B & M

Digbeth could really do with a repave and some new streetlights.

A friend has just got a job at B&M in St Matthew's, so that must be opening fairly soon.

No news on Old Square itself though.

Google Earth has now been updated for Walsall. Shows St Matthew's development and the new Primark.

(I say new, it's been there two years now!)

Are those still market stalls? All the renders I've seen don't include such a thing?

I thought they'd moved the market to be honest.

I wonder why we're not hearing anything about this development. B&M opens within the next fortnight. Poundland might already be open? But even the "The Quarter" website doesn't have any news on this. And I've seen no photos of the development at all.

There are still only two units let so far, but is that really surprising when we've had no information?

I thought the market was being relocated on to the Bridge, but on the photo you published it seems a little hap-hazard with stalls on that site
