Other than family and friends I miss Perth weather more than anything else since moving to Melbourne.

I lived right on the river near East Perth most of my life and during summer I would kayak from the Power station to Maylands then head back past through to the Claisebrook inlet. If I wasn't kayaking I was at City Beach and if not that I was at Hillarys.

Even winters are fine, as long as it's not pissing down or windy you can bike around the river or take a drive down West coast drive, park your car and watch the choppy Indian ocean.

A Holiday Inn Express sounds like exactly the kind of hotel Perth needs, not 5-star expensive and not backpacker-crappy.

LOL at work we have a firm spending budget we have to stick to when working over state which we have to do a lot.

W.A (including Perth) and Regional QLD are the only two places in Aus exempt from the budget. Basically it's expected we will pay almost 50% more for accommodation and 25% more for meals.

Bring on the cheaper hotels.

Is T-Rex rhyming slang for hex? Or is there some other origin for that?

Tourists to sleep behind prison bars
Kent Acott, The West Australian March 30, 2013,

People will soon be sleeping behind bars in historic Fremantle Prison — but it will be at their own cost and not at the Governor’s pleasure.

Twenty-two years after the prison was closed, there are plans for short-stay tourist accommodation in its former women’s division.

The plan from youth hostels group YHA Australia involves 200 beds. Half will be in dormitories in existing heritage-listed buildings and the other half will be rooms with ensuites and rooms for families in a purpose-built block.

The project has received $247,513 as one of 65 tourism initiatives to share in $13.1 million in recent Federal Government funding.

YHA WA chief executive Domenic Pimpinella said tourists would be using it by the end of next year.

He said fees would be similar to the YHA’s Perth accommodation, with dormitory beds at about $35 a night, double beds with ensuite $108 and family rooms $130.

It would suit anyone wanting clean, budget accommodation. “The development will enhance the heritage character of the Fremantle experience and provide a unique experience for visitors,” he said.

Mr Pimpinella said work would begin once the building permit was obtained and an old workshop — deemed to have no heritage significance — had been demolished.

Prison executive manager Bevan Beaver said the short-stay accommodation was in keeping with its master plan.

Local MP Melissa Parke said the project would bring new life and vitality to the prison precinct.

She said it would use an underutilised section of the prison and allow guests to strongly engage with the building’s rich history.

In 2010, the prison became Perth’s only World Heritage-listed building

Wouldn't be the first jail hotel (or the first one in Australia) but its still a very cool idea.
