Went there just in the nick of time.

Anyway, this has happened before. When I went to Vienna in 2008 a huge thunderstorm fücked up the Euro 08 broadcasting center 2 days after I had left. Now that I'm leaving for northern Germany I wonder what will happen to that region.

It's eastern Germany after all. There's no one left there.

Thanks, Kampflamm!
Is this the region where you live?
If you had to choose between the former DDR and visit these cities plus Berlin, or Munich plus Nuernberg, Passau, Regensburg and Salzburg in Austria... which would you recommend for a first-time visitor to Germany?

Nope, I actually live in Bonn.

About your travelling question...really appears to be a difficult choice. Regensburg and Passau are quite nice as well although I was personally somewhat disappointed when I visited Salzburg years ago.

Looking at a city by city comparison:

Munich or Berlin...I suppose it all depends on your personal taste. Architecturewise Munich might have more pre-WW2 stuff to offer although if you're in Berlin I recommend visiting Potsdam as well. Berlin oozes history though and there are a number of nice areas to explore in the city as well. Let's call it a draw.

Dresden > Nuremberg. Nuremberg suffered a lot of damage during WW2 just like Dresden did but I think the latter has been rebuilt in a better manner.

Görlitz really is a fantastic city with a lot to offer in terms of architecture so I might choose it over Regensburg and Passau although you can't go wrong with these 2 cities either.

If you're in Saxony, I'd also recommend visiting Meißen instead of Zittau. Zittau is by no means an ugly city but it's literally in the corner of Saxony while Meißen is close to Dresden and you could visit it while going to Leipzig (or coming from over there).

While talking about Zittau... Why did you skip Pirna? It's a stunning sleeping beauty.

You can't visit every city. Pirna, Meißen etc will have to wait their turn.

Sure. But I'd prefer it way before Zittau. You gotta take the time to walk through Elbsandsteingebirge as well then.
