It takes more than 3 years! I don't understand why the renovaion takes so much time. Do they tear the entire old stands down and rebuild the stadium? If not it can't take so long!

They will leave only part of the 1st tier, app. 28 000 seats. So there's quite a lot of work, as Burislav said, it's not only a modernisation, it's rebuilding.

Actually, I haven't seen any official number for the capacity, seems architects and authorities mind telling it at this very moment. But to me it seems that it might be more. Of course not enough to compete with 1964, but still.

Where do you have the 105,000 figure from?
In general Wiki is not a very riable source.
Btw: For the 3rd place playoff: 3,869 in Camp Nou

It is an official project, changes in the project won't take place. Building works will begin right after knocking down a shopping centre which was being built by the stadium.

The first stage of building works will consist in taking the upper level of podiums off, then the capacity of the stadium will amount to 28k. Next modernization, being aimed at a reconstruction in order to exploit the possibility places will move works beneath podiums for requirements UEFA. At the same time an addition of two levels of modern podiums will last. Roofing over and installing the new elevation will be the last stage of works.
It will be almost complete reconstruction of the present stadium, therefore works will last for almost 3 years. Works delayed on account of a lawsuit about knocking a shopping centre down and for very process of demolishing this centre. Almost immediately building works will start, so he isn't for every to worry.

Yes, because football games during the 1980 Olympics were played here. However, it used to be called "Republican" before Independence, which was an unacceptable name after 1991 because Ukraine was no longer called "Ukrainian Soviet Socialistic Republic". Olympic was the most logical name for the arena.

1. Do you know a single competition that has not been "doomed" by the media? Euro 2004? Athens 2004? Beijin 2008? London 2012?

2. Name the sources please. (Reliable sources)

There are probably no such sources, a whole is speculations of media. The ready project, the executor are also confirming the readiness to start works. Instead of to believe media and speculations better to look for the verified information and the ones threats to construction of this stadium are pointing out to the lack

Trouble around Kiev, acording to Reuters:

Soccer-Taiwanese company denies delaying Euro 2012 stadium

KIEV, June 17 (Reuters) - A Taiwanese company hired to renovate the stadium scheduled to host the final of Euro 2012 denied on Tuesday it was delaying the upgrade of the 80,000-seat Olympic stadium.

Eric Hsu, the president of the Archasia Design Group, told Reuters by telephone from Taipei that Ukranian officials had failed to provide key documents.

"They are supposed to give us the survey of the existing site, but they have not," he said.

A statement from Ukraine's sport ministry earlier said Archasia had produced no evidence it had proper legal status and could complete the renovations.

"The company has still to produce documents confirming it is entitled to operate in Ukraine and offered no plans to complete reconstruction work," the statement said.

It said independent experts in Ukraine this month "confirmed the conclusions of UEFA experts voicing doubts over whether Archasia Design Group's renovation proposals can be completed.

"The company's position in correcting technical errors and settling legal issues is threatening to torpedo negotiations."

Last Thursday an official from the Ukrainian soccer federation said the country could lose the right to co-host the tournament with Poland because of the delays.

Two days ago UEFA officials denied Spain had been approached as a possible replacement host if Ukraine failed to resolve infrastructure problems.

In January, UEFA President Michel Platini criticised slow preparations in Ukraine. He is due to make another visit on July 1.

Hsu said his company, which was awarded the contract in March, would have no difficulty meeting UEFA demands.

"They are delaying the contract, I don't know why. They are supposed to give us a survey of the existing site and supposed to demolish the building in front of the stadium and provide us with a drawing. They haven't done that," he said.

Hsu said efforts were being made to secure proper legal status in Ukraine and added he had met with UEFA twice last month.

President Viktor Yushchenko has urged government officials to come up with concrete solutions ahead of Platini's new visit to overcome the huge challenges in upgrading rail and road links, modernising airports and building hotels. (Editing by John Mehaffey).
