It was typical 90's work from Meriton.

I think Sydney's been over brutalised although some of his buildings are good (MLC + Oz square) the one in darlinghurst especially is an eyesore.

Horizon is one of the best apartment towers in Sydney. It is not brutalist at all.

I'm going to be honest and say Meriton make some of the ugliest, most uninspired Ikea-like Apartments in the world.

Cheap and Nasty, they certainly haven't done Sydney any style favours.

Just my opinion mates.

In most instances - absolutely. Other councils need to learn from Sydney City Council on good urban design.

Most developers in Sydney are also in the same boat.

I have to say, Soleil seems to be shooting up. I can't remember the last time I saw a building be built so quickly.

And here is a Seven News Brisbane Report from July 7 about Soleil. They show the views from the upper floors including the Gold Coast.

They were wrong in saying that it will be the second tallest tower in Australia.

VICTORIA PARK
MERITON'S VSQ PROJECT.

Compare this to the similar image in Cul's post above(214) for detail of the middle section.

The site is divided into 3 sections with VSQ2 on the right or north end, VSQ3 in the centre and VSQ4 on the left or south end.

The buildings in Cul's post 214 are of VSQ4.

VSQ3
Architect: Group GSA Architects
Completion: 2014?
The buildings of VSQ3:-

The tallest building in the VSQ3 project: 14 storeys.
NB that's VSQ2 with its 22 storey tower in the background.

VSQ3 the 10 storey block. The other 4 buildings of VSQ3 are 7 storeys.

Might as well do all the VSQ complexes at Victoria Park, Zetland, Sydney.

VSQ1
Located across on the western side of Defries Avenue from VSQ2-4.
Architect: Bates Smart
Completed: 2010
See p.9 post 175 of this thread.

The western front on Ascot Avenue.

The long eastern front on Defries Avenue; the north side on Hutchinson Walk.

VSQ2

Architect: Tony Caro Architects
Completion: 2012/13?

Tower is 22 storeys;the other 3 buildings are 7 storeys.

The approved de-coloured version. The original design was much prettier, very eye-catching, but when it came out of council it was a much more sober version - whether it was the doing of council planners (not known for their imagination) or Meriton heavyweights (not known for their imagination either) is not known.

The Yellow House is the sole survivor of the bleaching process. Tower design is still pretty striking, especially for Meriton.

The south western corner - the tower is behind this building hidden by the angle of the image, the Yellow House is on the left.

Meanwhile...at the north end of Victoria Park at the corner of Sth Dowling, O'Dea & Gadigal we have:

VSQNORTH
Also Meriton.
Architect: Turner + Associates
Completion: 2013?

Tower will be the tallest in Victoria Park at 27 storeys but may be eclipsed by a projected and apparently approved in concept just in the past week, 28 storey tower on Bourke Street, Zetland, in the future Green Square Town Centre.

This complex is under construction and charging ahead. The core of the tower is at level 6.
