MOZAMBIQUE'S MAIN PORTS UNDERGO REFURBISHMENT

The Strategy for Integrated Transport Development, approved by the Mozambican government, is underway in Mozambique with some work carried out at the country’s larger ports, the deputy Transport and Communications Minister said in Beira.

Amongst the improvements being made to the ports, deputy Minister Eusébio Saide noted dredging of the access channel and manoeuvring basin at the port of Beira, construction of the coal terminal and the ocean dredger with a capacity of 2,500 cubic metres, amongst other projects.

“Alongside the work underway at the port of Beira, improvements are also being made to the Sena and Machipanda railroads in order to improve their capacity and safety,” said Saide cited by Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias after signing a formal delivery and final acceptance protocol for three ships as part of the project to “Improve Sea Operations at the Port of Beira.”

Taking into account the limited capacities of both the Sena line and the port of Beira, several studies are underway for construction of facilities to ensure the transport of high quantities of minerals expected to be mined over the next few years.

The new railway lines that are being considered include two branch lines linking the Sena line to the Nacala line to allow for the use of the port of Nacala as well as construction of another line linking Moatize to the port of Macuse, in Zambézia province.

“These alternatives should be complemented by construction of coal terminal in Nacala-a-Velha and in Macuse,” said the deputy Transport and Communications Minister. (macauhub)

^^ capacity of ports means nothing guys, as most ports actually operate why over their "capacity" numbers. Additionally TEUS is only one method to look at busy ports. Most ports handle things in addition to containers therefore it is important to monitor total Tonnes handled by ports to give the overall picture of whats coming and going not just containers.

here are the Full year 2011 Stats for all South African Ports

CARGO HANDLED BY TONNES during 2011

PORT | 2011 million tons | 2010 million tons
Richards Bay | 86.627 | 85.466
Durban | 80.764 | 76.120
Saldanha Bay | 59.697 | 53.789
Cape Town | 13.875 | 13.239

I thought Richards bay and Durban were one thing, as in, Richards bay being a harbor in Durban.

#58 ·
Additionally Durban has R22billion ($3billion) committed to the Port over the next 5 years. In addition to this there is R9billion ($1.2 billion) commited to back of port rail development.

Also Environmental assessments are underway for the R100 billion ($13 Billion) Phase 1 of the new dig out port on the old Durban airport site. Work is expected to start in 2014.

The Port of Richards Bay's Coal Terminal is the world's biggest, with capacity to handle 91 million tons per year.

Richards Bay is SA's premier bulk port and the most modern. Although built in 1976 for the export of coal, it has since expanded into other bulk and breakbulk cargoes.

In 2010 the port handled 84.937 million tonnes of cargo. A far cry from the unimpressed view expressed by Commissioner Henry Cloete in 1843, when he surveyed the Mhlatuze estuary and declared it to have little or no potential as a future harbour.

Situated at Longitude 32º 02' E and Latitude 28º 48' S, Richards Bay, South Africa's most northernmost and easterly port, is 87 nautical miles (160 km) northeast of Durban and 252 n.miles (465 km) southwest of Maputo.

#65 ·
Quick question; so does the port handle 91 mil tons or does it just have the capacity to handle 90 mi? I noted the statement said "with capacity to handle" so I guess what am asking is; it might have the capacity but does it handle that much?

#66 ·
^^The 91 million is the nameplate capacity, the actual exports are not close to the official capacity, in the last year coal exports from Richards Bay were around 68 million tons, the main bottleneck is the railway from the coalfields.

+1

So there seem be great competition for the 1st place iside the actual podium and more competitiion for the 4th place (en red).

P.S. IMO Tangier Med I reached its max capacity, it will no be 1st in 2014 noor in 2015, this year the 1st container port will be egyptian and tonnage volumes will still be south african.

Perhaps Tangier will reach Port Said & Durban volumes many years later when all phases of The new Tangier Med II port ( 5 Millions TEUs) will be finished.

Phase 1 of Tangier Med II (2.2 Millions TEUs) is Ready for 2015, instead of launching Phase 2 for Tangier Med II soon Morocco seems to launch construction of the Nador Wes Med first :

Nador West Med (3+2 Millions TEUs Expected for 2018).

IMO Moroccan and egyptian ports are surely helped for the volumes of traffic through Suez & Gibraltar but they have big spanish, Turkish and Italian competitors things not existent for south african ports :

^^

The activity of ports depends tightly of the activity of the maritim routes before Panama and Suez Canals were constructed big part of the trade with asia used to passe through Cape of good Hope, now the maritim traffic is as below:

But cause of the climat global warming the arctic route opened first time this year for maritim trade:

If a ship travels from Busan via the Suez Canal to the Netherlands, it would normally take 24 days but if it uses the Arctic routes, it would take only 14 days .

Is there any thread about works in Canal Suez project?
