You would think Liebor being the working persons party they would want to lift people out of poverty and off benefits.

One might even think they want as many people as possible dependant on the state? Surely not.

Go back to the politics thread. This is a population thread.

The first post was about a percentage increase in part of our population ( note the word population)who happen to be unemployed.

Here's another figure for you about population, 135,000 work visa's issued in the last 12 months , see any tie between the two?

Please ensure you comment on all those who have made a political response in reply to the post.

There doesn't have to be a tie between the two. An unemployed 19 year from Kawerau can not fill the role of an Electrician at a building site in Auckland.

Like you have said in the past, it's a "good idea helping sectors who can't find labour".

Good idea helping sectors who can't find labour.
I think your relentless obsession with the Labour Party/population growth/immigrants is resulting in the incoherent arguments.

The skills shortage lists is here: https://skillshortages.immigration.govt.nz/

Might help with the paranoia.

Links between population increase, unemployment statistics and visas are all good. It's your insistence on Labour bashing that can be taken over to the politics thread. I'm not saying you're necessarily wrong or right, just saying to move that politically motivated stuff into another thread.

In that case Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Rolleston, and Lincoln are part of Christchurch

Not really.

Kaiapoi and Rangiora are satellite towns of Christchurch whereas Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Wellington are contiguous. There's a big difference.

Not anymore everything has changed Wellington city is 215,000 while Christchurch city is 385,000. Lower Hutt is it's own city and now a separate urban area from Wellington. The urban areas have all been downsized too. Individual cities have been delinked Napier and Hastings are no longer combined as well. Auckland lost Hibiscus Coast 77,000.

Christchurch UA has lost heaps from the changes. From 404,500 down to 377,000 so a 27,500 cut. Kaiapoi, Prebbleton and Lyttleton have all been removed plus other areas. They are all now separate individual urban areas.

I get that's what Stats NZ are saying. I think the counterargument is to look at commonsense. Lower Hutt is contiguous to Wellington Central. Personally I think Lower Hutt is part of Wtn Upper Hutt definitely isn't and Porirua is too. It's none stop built up all the way except the hill from Johnsonville to Tawa.

Satellite towns are exactly that. So Hibiscus Coast and Pukekohe aren't part of Auckland, neither is Kumeu (but will be soon). When I was growing up I wouldn't have considered Howick as part of Auckland s their were several km's of farmland between it and Pakuranga but it certainly is now.

Same for the plains towns. Not part of Christchurch

Wellington City has a population 210,000, but similar to the fact that the City of Sydney is only 240,000, this is not an accurate reflection of the urban area as a whole. Wellington, The Hutt, Porirua and even Kapiti are all part of one contiguous built up area that shares a overarching public transport network where most residents commute between the two daily. It’s not uncommon for residents in any of the 4 cities to simply tell people that they live in ‘Wellington’; they’re far too integrated to be considered seperate. To me it seems pedantic and inaccurate to not count the population of all 4 cities as one single urban area.

WLG and CHC, depending on what measure is used, the population ranking switches. In reality they are pretty much neck and neck. That being said, regardless of population Wellington definitely has an urbanism and sense of ‘city’ that is unmatched by anything in Christchurch. Not saying that there aren’t any benefits to Christchurch, they just appeal to different tastes is all .

Lastly, given how the article that prompted the debate is worded, it reads a little like the old South Island inferiority complex peeking through again
