Pearl Sky is expecting final.completion in July

To be honest I have no idea. Last I saw were the tender documents and can't find anything beyond that.

The next one's to watch are hotel as part of the first phase of the point development - likely 5 star and flashy to get attention.

Then a 4/5 star hotel beach facing in the Film City development next to Suncoast.

The only other ones announced but not working on yet are a hotel in uMhlanga as part of the Skye development and a new 3 star hotel to be built on current parking lot land as part of the Gateway expansion. With all the hotels coming up in uMhlanga they might have paused this hotel development for now.

There are also hotels under construction to the north of the city. The Simbithi Hotel to be operated by Mantis collection in Ballito is rising. There is also a hotel in the Mount Richmore estate underway. Next will be the new 5 star hotel as part of the Zimbali Lakes development, but that is 3 years away at least.

Do you have a thread for Simbithi Hotel? How many rooms is it?

You are missing out quite alot.

Royal Sibaya at the Sibaya Casino
Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel in Durban North
Audacia Manor in Morningside
Essenwood House in Morningside
Upton Hall in Morningside

If we really want to get into it, there are loads more in the midlands like Karkloof Hotel and Spa or Fordoun Hotel and Spa plus many others. Plus all the game parks which is an easy 15 more.

Under Construction

Simbithi Hotel - Matis Collection

There is a few extra we have not heard about before. And some surprising things. It is missing the proposed 5 star resort in Beachwood.

However I am surprised by a Ferris wheel inclusion. I know these have become commonplace all over the world now, but for the life of me I do not understand the fascination. The Singapore one makes zero profit, as with many others. They kept getting bigger as vanity projects. Surely this wheel would duplicate the role of the SkyCar on Moses Mabhida?

It is surprising that there is a glaring gap of nothing going on on the established South Coast where the infrastructure is already in place and just need modern resorts incorporated. I wonder why no one is looking in this area?

We need this diversity of resorts. It's been cried out for for years and nothing has happened. Durban and KZNs biggest advantage is weather, beaches and nature. Combining a European beach holiday with wildlife is a winner winner chicken dinner, that we should have done in the 90s

Totally agree re: Ferris Wheel. I personally see no appeal in going around in vertical circles, at slow speed. I also know of no other person who would pay money to experience that, especially when, nearby, you have the top of the stadium arch, which will offer even better views.

Cape Town defends hotel market share
by tarshdavid
Durban sees big increase in development
June 4, 2018

Trevor Ward, Managing Director,
W Hospitality Group

Matthew Weihs, Managing Director,
Bench Events
Cape Town retains the biggest share of planned hotel development in South Africa despite showing a decrease in total planned rooms, according to a regional focus from the influential annual hotel pipeline survey by W Hospitality Group.

Cape Town has 25% of the South African development pipeline, with 1,063 rooms in six hotels. Durban now has 16% with 697 rooms in five hotels, an increase of 40% in terms of total rooms on last year.

The stats are a little funny in that they talk of Durban and uMhlanga separately rather than combining the numbers. If they did it would be very close to the Cape Town share

Radisson gears up for accelerated expansion in SA
5 Sep 2018

The Radisson Hotel Group will expand its presence significantly in South Africa.

Radisson Hotel Group, one of the world’s largest hotel groups, has geared up for aggressive hotel growth in South Africa, with a focus on key cities.

“As part of our ambitious five-year development plan, we have identified key cities for scaled growth, three of which are located in South Africa – Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban,” said Andrew Mclachlan, Senior VP, Development, Sub-Saharan Africa for the Radisson Hotel Group, speaking at the Thinc Africa Conference.

Considering they have no hotels in Durban at present and only the Radisson Blu in umhlanga announced, I really wonder where the other 4 in 5 years will come from?

We have seen the potential plans for a dual branded Radisson and Park Inn property for the beachfront. The Radisson Collection property for Beachwood in Durban north. Potentially another for umhlanga or Sibaya?

‘Legendary’ Durban beachfront hotel to shut down in January
News / 19 October 2019, 11:39am / Duncan Guy

Durban - In spite of the sunshine outside, a grey cloud hangs over the veranda of the legendary Gooderson Beach Hotel, as regulars lament the January closure of one of their favourite haunts.
Built in the first decade of the last century, it became an iconic beachfront hotel. Now there are plans for it to become residential.
