Jobs lost as Carlisle city shop set to close

Carlisle's Aga showroom is set to close its doors tomorrow.

The company has announced it is leaving its outlet on Lowther Street, in the city centre. Four people are set to lose their jobs.

The company has not given a reason for the closure, but a posted is in the window of the store announcing the decision.

A spokeswoman for Aga said: "Regrettably the Aga store is set to close, unfortunately causing one full-time and three part-time roles to become redundant.

"As a retailer we constantly review our locations and seek new opportunities to best serve our customers."

The nearest Aga stores to Carlisle are in Kendal, Glasgow and Newcastle.

Some retail news from the other end of the county, courtesy of the NW Evening Mail:

"Retail giant set to open huge superstore in Barrow

A GROCERY chain is set to combine two empty units on a Barrow retail park and open a large superstore the same size as seven tennis courts.

Aldi plans to take over the former Dreams and B&M Bargains units at Hollywood Retail Park in Hindpool Road, knock through to combine the two and create a huge new supermarket.

Aldi already has two other supermarkets in Barrow - one in Risedale Road and another at Hindpool Retail Park, close to the site of the proposed new store.
Although Aldi refused to provide an official statement on the plans, sources suggested it could be likely they intend to close the Hindpool Retail Park shop once the new store is open."

Job losses as Carlisle distribution centre closes

About 30 jobs will be lost when department store John Lewis closes its distribution centre in Carlisle.

The retailer has confirmed to the News & Star that its 50,000sq ft depot in the city's Kingmoor Park industrial estate will close later this month.

It follows more than a year of consultation with staff based in Carlisle, after the firm blamed changing shopping habits for its decision to shut the depot.

The refurbished McDonald's at Kingstown, Carlisle

A busy McDonald's outlet has opened following a major revamp.

The branch at Kingstown, Carlisle, had been closed for several weeks as the building was overhauled, with the site stripped back and giant cranes being used to life a new part of the unit in.

The restaurant is the latest McDonald's outlet in the region to be given a "digital makeover", with touch-screens installed for customers to order their food.

Second venture for team behind Kendal's Brew Brothers

THE family behind a successful Kendal cafe is hoping to impress customers with a new farmhouse inspired offering.

Tony Benton, director of Brew Brothers on Highgate, has opened The Farmhouse Kitchen, aiming to offer artisan, wholesome food.

"There will be a few similarities with Brew Brothers and The Farmhouse Kitchen obviously," Tony said. "But it's a separate brand, we've created a new brand. We didn't want it to be the same as Brew Brothers.

"We are trying to create another market for the lovely people of Kendal where they can come and relax and have some really good food. There are some quality offerings out there in Kendal and we'd like to be part of that offer."

Easter sunshine gave Carlisle shops major boost

Easter sunshine gave Carlisle shops major boost

Retailers
saw a welcome jump in the number of people shopping in April thanks to the Easter holidays and good weather.

The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle saw an 11 per cent rise in footfall when compared to the Easter weekend last year.

In fact the shopping has seen increases in footfall on the May Bank Holiday Saturday, up 2.2 per cent, and last weekend - up 10 per cent when compared to the previous year. The Saturday before Mother's Day also saw a four per cent increase.

Holly Woodhead, marketing manager at The Lanes, said: “It was quite quiet at the beginning of the year. Then we had Mother's Day and Easter quite close together so April was a really big month for us... The good weather helped."

The announcement came as nationally data from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG showed that like-for-like UK retail sales jumped 5.6 per cent last month compared to a 0.9 per cent decline a year earlier, while total sales climbed 6.3 per cent.

Work on this scheme, approved in November last year, is starting today with the car park being closed and preparatory work getting under way.

No doubt there will be a lot of disgruntlement amongst car park users, as the temporary replacement is at the other end of the industrial estate.

Tiny Carlisle shop revamped and relaunched

A shop which sits in the shadow of Carlisle’s landmark St Cuthbert’s Church is looking forward to a bright future after a revamp.

Plants adorn the pavement outside The Cupboard in Heads Lane which sits alongside the greenery of the churchyard giving a relaxed almost rural feel to the area.

Just a stone’s throw from the High Street stores of English Street, the quirky little shop sells everything from handmade furniture and candles to knitted pan scrubs.
It also stocks T-shirts, caps and hoodies by Red Torpedo who make official clothing for motorcycle racer and TV personality Guy Martin.

The plants on the doorstep are for sale as are an array of gifts, jewellery and scarves.

Behind the venture is Helen Dixon, 42, who together with her other half Chris Simpson used to own the nearby Old Engine House cafe in West Walls.
