Sorry for writing in English.

One thing that striked me most when I visited Moscow first, was the lack of trees in many central spots. Compared to many western cities, this is really strange. Trees create a pleasant atmosphere for pedestrians. This is why I didn't really enjoy walking on Tverskaya ulitsa.

However, it wasn't always like this:

Are there any plans of planting new trees in Moscow? I found several blog posts about that, some indicating that this process has already started. Do you know more about this topic?

The historical city centre is now indeed being slowly turned into pedestrian friendly zone with wider sidewalks and other goods, but the problem with trees still remains a headache. Supposedly the main issue is that there is physically no space underneath the sidewalks due to all the communication cables or, for example, sewage system. Planting the trees will most likely require a massive underground reconstruction, which will probably last for ages and get on everyone's nerves during the process.
Despite all of that, some of the recent renders do have trees in them so we'll have to wait and see whether we get them or not.

Hope this helps!

I just didn't think about all the technical aspects oft planting trees. But it sounds good hat they're working on a solution.

Do you know when and why most trees were removed? Looking at the above image, this must have happened somewhere in the second half of the 20th century.

Most of such changes were made by previous Moscow's major - Luzhkov, late 1990-th - early 2000-th.

As the above poster said, most of the trees were removed in the 90's and early 2000's, as many people suddenly could purchase cars and started congesting the city streets. The Boulevard ring was the main transport artery for people going to work downtown, and it suffered the most from this. Today, it is a 10 lane asphalt river, and is not very pedestrian friendly. However, lots of pedestrian streets have been created recently, and they are absolutely wonderful to walk around. The process of widening roads and removing trees is similar to what Western Europe went through in the 60's, when public transportation and pedestrian spaces were largely ignored in favor of large road infrastructure projects. However, in 90's Moscow, not much road construction went on and we have to make it all now.

They were removed because they were dead. And they died because of the salt. Salt forms aerosol, which kills the buds. Tree loses more and more leaves, and eventually dies NOx from cars also contributed to almost complete extermination of trees from central streets.
