HAMBURG U-Bahn operator Hamburger Hochbahn has exercised an option worth around €100m with Alstom for a further 27 DT5 trains

The 40m-long three-car sets were ordered using an option from the original 2006 contract for 67 trains. An initial option for 13 extra trains was exercised in March 2015 and the latest option takes the total number of DT5s in service or on order to 107 sets

So, the construction start in 2012 is only for this "short" section in the west?
This line 5 is a rather ambitious project, it is the only subway line that will really venture in the east of Hamburg.

I note that it will be another line serving Hauptbahnhof. Hamburg heavy rail network (U bahn and S bahn) is maybe a bit too much centralized on this station.

HAMBURG city senator for economics, transport and innovation Mr Frank Horch announced on November 8 that the city has instructed German Rail (DB) subsidiary S-Bahn Hamburg to exercise an option for 12 additional Bombardier class 490 EMUs to increase capacity on lines S3 and S11

Six extra trains are required to enable six-car operation of all services on Line S11, while four sets will be used to extend the operation of nine-car trains on the core Neugraben - Innenstadt - Elbgaustrasse section of Line S11. Has there been any proposals to swap the Norderstedt branch of U1 with the Poppenbüttel bransch of the S1?

At the time U1 were extended to Norderstedt it probably made the most sense.

But today it seems like it would had been a better idea if S-Bahn went to Norderstedt, because then it would had been easy to convert the A2 from Norderstedt to Uelzburg (and onwards to Kaltenkirschen) to S-Bahn standard and eliminate the need to change trains at Norderstedt. After all, the area along this short line is rather buildt up.

Would it be technically possible to do this swap without extensive costs for rebuilding tunnels, bridges and similar?

Or, how about extending U1 from Norderstedt to Uelzburg?

The U1 to Norderstedt is in many places a substitute of the former AKN. U-Bahn slowly went northwards and ended for a long time at Garstedt. It is important to know that Hamburgs and Berlins U-Bahn and AKN have been build in accordance with the "Preußisches Kleinbahngesetz" until WWII. This was a law created at the end of the 19. century to make it possible to build cheap local reailway-lines with lower speed and lower quality than a real railway. Something similar like SNCV in Belgium e. g.. So rebuilding a AKN or U-Bahn into S-Bahn is really complicated. It will be done actually with S21 from Elbgaustraße to Kaltenkrichen and they need to completly rebuild the AKN. This will be probably the only real S-Bahn reaching Kaltenkirchen.

As they build the S-Bahn-terminus at Hamburg-airport it was built in a way that a future S-Bahn could go further north to Kaltenkrichen but it was clear that it would need a completly new line far away from U1. So, this was never taken very seriously. If ever, I assume that U1 would be extended further north. Acutally there is no capacity problem with U1 to Norderstedt. At-grade-crossing would have to be removed because of third rail. At the moment they are talking about the U-Bahn-project of a new-line U5 from Sengelmannstraße to to the city. It´s an old project and it was thought in the past to give a faster travel-time from northern suburbs into the city.
