Selling the Opera House and converting it into apartments does not seem unbelievable

They are not broke, by a long way.

The Harbour Bridge generates some revenue in tolls that goes to the state government coffers.

Other than that, and perhaps more importantly, the bridge provides a public good: people like looking at it, people cannot be charged for looking at it, one person looking at it does not detract from others to do so.

Public goods, a classic example being street lights, cannot be provided by the private sector as it is impossible to compel users to pay for them. The police, the legal system as a whole that ensures property rights cannot be privatised. That is indeed a good reason to have a government.

Coming back to the bridge, a private operator would not have the incentives to keep the bridge looking pretty. If they were forced to do so then it would not be a good business.

Note that parking is not a public good as it is indeed possible to get users to pay for it. So, there is no real economic reason to be provided by the government free or charge.

And nobody is going to pay much for the opera house unless they let them knock it down to build apartments. Geez!

They are not interested in loss of revenue they would just want a quick quid now before the revenue drops after there is a second crossing also they sold the poles and wires didn’t they after they gold plated them to get top dollar.
