Baroque Churches of France

This topic follows my thread about the Renaissance churches of France : French Churches with Renaissance architecture

Less known than Gothic churches, many French churches were built during the 17th - 18th centuries, started by the Counter-Reformation movement.

In the early 17th century, the facades was inspired by the Jesuit Church of the Gesù in Rome, with the three orders of columns, Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
The Italian baroque introduced also the cupola or dome, a major element of the French Baroque architecture (French classicism).

This style takes symmetric compositions, noble and simple forms, avoiding the exuberant decoration and favoring the stonework and metalwork.
Therefore, the interior of the baroque churches within the kingdom of France looks more sober, compared to the border regions (French Flanders, Alsace, Savoy, Provence, Corsica, Northern Catalonia, Basque Country) and the rest of Europe.

The baroque architecture was followed by the neoclassical architecture, appeared in the seconde half of the 18th century.
This return to the source (Ancient Greek and Roman models) featured sobriety, straight lines, and forms, such as the colonnade, portico and pediment.
