NORTHLAND + WHANGAREI | Region Development

Wasn't a thread for this area of the country and I think there should be. Kick it off with a big panorama of Whangarei which in my opinion, looks like a shithole

Lovely natural setting, I mean it really is absolutely stunning. Pity about the sprawl, err, I mean town.

In the this is New Zealand thread Kane sent in a post about Northland having up to $32.5 billion worth of gold. Is there likely to be a mineral boom up your way.

That pano is of Whangarei from the top of Mt.Parahaki, it is relatively recent because you can see the gargantuan new Wharehouse in the centre-left of the image.
I guess Whangarei is pretty sprawled for a town of 45,000-50,000.
I lived in the suburb on the far left of the pic and to drive to the area in the far right of the picture, in the suburbia just below that hill that is half bush/half grass, used to take me 20 minutes even late at night.
Even though I thought WHG was a hole when I lived there, it was great to come over the brynderwins after venturing south, back to the balmy temperatures and gorgeous coastline of Whangarei Heads.

IT'S WHANGAREI-O-CLOCK

Here are some images of my home town, which I found during hours of trawling the internet.

First, some old photos of the town

Cameron St

Bank Street

The old BNZ building which no longer stands.

The Public Trust Office, which is still there.

The Town Hall(now known as the Whangarei Municipal Building), also still standing

View of the Town Basin, as seen from Riverside on the opposite bank of the Hatea River

Whangarei Falls

The bottom of the falls, as seen from above

The Town Basin, which was cleaned up and developed in the nineties, before which it was smelly old fish sheds and warehouses etc.
This area includes a clock museum with a huge ass sundial in front of it.

Inside the clock museum

CBD streets.....

Looking down Rathbone St, towards Mt Parahaki

Cameron Street Mall, the main shopping street in Whangarei

Quality Street, an arcade between Cameron and Vine Streets

Riverside Drive

Building with a mix and match facade fronting Laurie Hall Park, last I heard it was going to be converted into apartments and a wine bar or something along those lines

Whangarei Airport....LOL

Marsden Point oil refinery, and power station(s)

Farmland near whangarei

Some pictures of Whangarei Heads, and beaches in the area.....

Smugglers Cove

The island with a door, in Whangarei Harbour.
There are so many urban myths about what this island is used for, I can't remember the actual explanation but I'm sure it's pretty mundane.

Beaches

Livestock, Cabbage trees, Pohutakawa trees, the beach....this is how I think of New Zealand when I get homesick.......

Mt Manaia

Check out all the Kauri trees.......

Mt Manaia on the left, Bream Head(Te Whara) on the right

Whangarei from the top of the Brinderwyns.......

Wow! Stunning! I never thought Whagarei would be so beautiful. Even the town centre looks nice although, the name of Quality Street is a bit weird

Those are really nice pictures. I obviously didn't do Whangarei justice when I was there a wee while ago. I saw some of those areas, but not all.

Quality Street is a brand of chocolates (bit like Cadbury's Roses) in England.

Thanks for those...

I love Whangarei. We use to go up most years when I was young. One of my mums best friends and family live there. We use to think it was the tropics! My brother use to always get sick on the drive up from the family home in Auckland. Is there a motorway being built up that far?? Can't remember what the transit thread says............haven't got time to look.....

Motorway to Puhoi when the latest stage of alpurt opens including the new tunnels etc.

At present the motorway goes as far as Orewa and it's pretty messy north of there.

And then ... much ... much ... later transit is undertaking 4 laning the rest of the way to Whangarei. The next project on their 10 year plan is by passing Warkworth and I think 4 lanes to it from Puhio. When that's done then the2nd north bound tunnel lane will open, so transit is a little keen.

Marsden Point Railway

This has been talked about for a long time.

As I understand it the regional council is negotiating with land owners to purchase the required land and that once that has been done Ontrack will designate the route. This doesn't mean it will be built straight away, but provides a legally protected route (like the proposed Avondale-Southdown line in Auckland).

From the NZ Herald:

Quote:
Rail line plans for Northland
5:00AM Wednesday November 28, 2007

Railway infrastructure agency Ontrack and the Northland Regional Council are forming a joint venture to advance the designation of land needed to build a new 16km rail line south of Whangarei.

The proposed line would link the existing Northland-Auckland line at Oakleigh with the new deep-water port at Marsden Pt.
