Cape Town International Airport reaches exponential growth.

By Henry Booysen
21 December 2007

Cape Town international Airport made the record books on Wednesday when they passed the 8 million passenger mark.

For 2007 alone CTIA had a record passenger growth totalling 819.496 rising a staggering 17% from 2006. Communications manager at CTIA Deidre Hendricks says that the numbers mean that on average approximately 25 000 passengers move through the airport on a daily basis.

“All these people come to the airport in approximately 18 000 vehicles daily. Cape Town International Airport has never been busier,” says Hendricks.

The airport is undergoing massive construction due to the building of the airports second multi-second storey car park, has caused a lot of inconvenience to users, but nonetheless the passenger mark is still increasing.

CTIA also appeals to passengers to bear with the construction activities and the growth rate accelerating being experienced.

New R900m airport terminal to alleviate overcrowding

By Dominique Herman

THE new R900 million central terminal building, which is still under construction and which is expected to be completed in time for the 2010 World Cup, will ease overcrowding of the domestic terminals at Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) - which last year saw a record number of passengers pass through its gates.

The central terminal will integrate check-in and security for international and domestic flights and provide capacity until 2015. Domestic arrivals and departures will also be split into separate levels - "almost like at OR Tambo (International Airport in Johannesburg)", according to Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) spokesperson Kim Webster.

Webster said it was Acsa's responsibility to provide the infrastructure, but unmanned counters were the responsibility of the airlines.

The advent of low-cost carriers meant the domestic terminals were busy all the time, but "a lot more meeters and greeters" over the festive season contributed to an even busier environment in the terminals.

"Operating an airport that is also a massive construction site is a huge challenge and it means that airport users have to endure some inconvenience during this period until the new infrastructure comes on stream," Webster said.

CTIA processed 8.3 million passengers last year - 1.1 million more than the year before.

The renovations at CTIA, the country's second-largest airport, are part of the R1.3 billion infrastructure investment in preparation for the World Cup. Work started in September 2006 and is due to be complete by December 2009.

Additions to the airport include a new elevated drop-off and go road in front of the terminals and a R100m expansion to its existing parking facility.

Taken shortly after New Year.

Kind of was driving away from the Airport when I took these but still, you can see something of the progress.

Went through there a month ago and was very impressed with the progress. The elevated road is nearing structural completion, with the ramps being constructed. Yes, the roof of the main terminal building is being moved into place, the structural work up to the 4th level seems complete. The second multi-storey parkade opposite the international terminal has begin rising from the ground. and, not a moment too soon, seeing that CTIA has broken the 8million PAX mark this year, by end 2009, even without the world cup, if the growth is sustained, we'll hit 10.5 milliion PAX at CTIA. 2010, with the world cup arrivals we'll probably hit 12-13million, just an educated guess.

A couple sums...

At the current 15.1% p.a. growth rate in passenger numbers, CTIA will have to process as many passengers in 2013 that ORTIA currently has. Does anyone remember what the new CTIA 2010 Terminal is designed to handle?

I believe 15,1% is actually a conservative number, considering no growth due to the FIFA World Cup is factored into this calculation, but just look how CTIA is likely to grow:

2007: 8.32mil PAX (known)
2008: 9.58mil PAX
2009: 11.02mil PAX
2010: 12.69mil PAX
2011: 14.60mil PAX
2012: 16.81mil PAX
2013: 19.35mil PAX
