Youth back EAC integration
East African Business Week
15 November 2014

Quote:
Representatives of young people in the East African Community (EAC) have asked that the ultimate goal of full regional integration be maintained.

Last week, they decided on resolutions concerning good governance, youth participation in leadership and economic activities, unemployment, together with peace and conflict resolutions.

The resolutions will be presented to the five presidents during the next Summit scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya at the end of this month.

More than 300 young people from Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda gathered in Arusha for the maiden East African Youth Governance Festival.

They brainstormed on the challenges and problems faced by the young people in the region and how to tackle them.

The festival – Zinduka - was aimed at creating a chance for them to meet and say exactly what they wanted for regional integration.

Kepta Ombati, the head of the festival’s organizing committee said, Zinduka is a Swahili word that literally means “a reawakening of consciousness.”

“An integrated EAC means a wider region with a bigger market; more jobs for youth; one voice in business negotiations; and partnerships with other regional bodies, business communities and even developed countries,” Ombati said.

“Negotiating as a one bloc gives the region more power than standing alone as individual nations,” he said.

Central banks agree on forex reserve ratio
The East African
15 November 2014

Quote:
East African Community partner states have reduced the stock of foreign exchange that central banks need to keep in a countdown to the ambitious launch of the East African dollar in less than a decade.

EAC central bank governors agreed during their Sectoral Council meeting in Nairobi two weeks ago that each country should all the time have enough dollars to buy 4.5 months’ worth of imports, yielding to pressure from Kenya, which felt the initial proposal of six months would hurt economies seeking to promote exports.

“We are going to the economic convergence stage of the Protocol on the East African Monetary Union (EAMU) and this is a comfortable rate that can be maintained by all the partner states,” said Eliazar Muga, senior assistant director of economic affairs at Kenya’s Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism.

EAC awareness drive kicks off
The New Times Rwanda
18 November 2014

Quote:
A study conducted in June this year showed that 44 per cent of Rwandans understand what EAC means and are aware of the opportunities that come with the integration process, Innocent Safari, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs (MINEAC) has said.

Safari was speaking at the launch of the East African Community Week yesterday.

The week, which will run from November 17 to 21, aims at rallying residents within the regional bloc toward understanding and supporting regional integration projects.

Flavia Salafina, Information, Education and Communication Specialist at MINEAC, said the study gave insights on what Rwandans expect from the integration process.

“After getting peoples’ views and feedback, we got clues on which approaches would be appropriate to make Rwandans aware of the integration benefits and opportunities. Those approaches include open talks, use of various media outlets and our website to inform them on what is going on as regards to integration,” she said.

“Seven years since Rwanda joined EAC, about $100 millions have been invested in the country by investors from the other partner states,” Safari said.

Tanzania's share of intra-regional trade in East African Community region has increased from 15 per cent in 2005 to 26 per cent by last year grossing over 1.5 billion US dollars, the government has said.

The Permanent Secretary at Ministry of East African Cooperation, Joyce Mapunjo, told reporters in Dar es Salaam that the country’s trade volume was only second to Kenya in the EAC region.

Why do we need to rename our currency? I always assumed we would settle for the East African Shilling, not the EA dollar.

East African Shilling has always been the working name for the new currency. Don't know why the term 'dollar' was used in that article.

why would we call it a dollar

when the shilling becomes stronger than the pound...we wouldn't want it to be called the "EA Dollar" let the shilling be by its self

shilling will one day be stronger than the pound

I don't want EA to leach the word dollar...we need a specific one that when someone says shilling people think of EA

dollar = USA
shilling = EA
pound = UK

Don't mind what name is eventually put forward, except 'Dollar' as it's far too generic.

That the bloc is working towards a single currency should indeed be welcomed.
