Hi everyone,

My name is Emil and let me introduce myself as an architecture buff like everyone else at skyscrapercity. I wanted to show you some interesting pics of the development of Sofia Airport. It's almost finished and it's looking good. But first let's look at what the airport will like upon completion in two months time.

SOFIA AIRPORT (Design when airport is completed on August 31/2005)

At this initial stage of construction the terminal will have nearly 60,000 square meters of floor space. At this phase there are over 10,000 square meters of glass fascades for natural light conditions in the daytime and over 6200 artificial light sources for the nighttime. There are four above ground floors in the central part of the terminal, which are accessible by 12 elevators, two of which are panoramic 'glass' elevators. There are also seven escalators and staircases. Furthermore, the terminal has a modern protrusion that is 210 meters long and contains 6 port-to-aircraft bridges. There are also another 2 bridges that come directly from the airport terminal for a current total of eight. Over the next five years the airport will continue growing in size and eventually the number of bridges are envisioned to triple. The Bulgarian government hopes to make Sofia a central business, tourism and transportation center of the Balkans, and this airport is one of many steps in this direction. Finally the four story garage has a capacity of 820 cars and is connceted to the terminal by numerous elevators.

It's going to be beautiful! The design of that parking garage is flawless, and I love how the building is laid out!

This is how the terminal looks as you approach it from the highway. Keep in mind that its about 200 meters wide.

Thanks for the help Sick Driver. Anyway here is a cool interior photo originaly taken by www.stroitelstvo.info staff members. You can see the two panorama elevators and some staircases and escalators. This photo is taken in the central part of the airport linking the arrivals and departures wings. The ceiling seen here is about 20 meters above the ground level. Note, the interior as seen here is almost finished.

Here's a good close-up photo of the terminal taken by the same people as stated above. You can get a sense of the size for the airport, because of all the people in its vicinity.

You must scroll left to right: If you look to the left and further in the distance with respect to the new terminal building, you will see here the new airtraffic control center. It is also huge and sleek, it's architecture designed to blend in with the terminal building itself.

I apologize if this picture is too big. If it's too much for you I'll try and reduce its size, but this is the only way you'll get an idea for this gigantic airport project. Note the big trucks around the airport. Look at how small they look in comparison to the building itself.

Emil, do you know any updates about the airport? It was delayed once, and now again because they found some dump they had to clean first, or something similar.
In any case, this terminal will be way better than the old one, which even renovated was awfully small. And I like the fact that we won't have to get into buses from the tarmac to the airport

About two weeks ago the transport minister Vassilev and the PM Coburg-Gotha went to see how the airport construction was coming along. Vassilev confirmed that the terminal building will be ready for the deadline of August 31/2005. As for the new runway, it will be ready sometime in October.

Now, what do you think about how this airport compares to others in Eastern Europe?

would be top 5 for sure, after new Warsaw, Poznan and Athens for sure 5th place... or 1st and others follow ,lol

Not including Russia & Turkey, only Warsaw, Athens & Prague may have better airports.

Heres a list i made of how it would fare. i have been to Athens Prague and Warsaw ones and i have seen Pznan which is excellent and now Sofia. This is the list of EE best airports

1.Athens
2.Prague
3.Warsaw
4.Sofia
5.Poznan
