Retail in Liverpool

I thought it might be useful to have a general thread for retail in Liverpool. Not neccessarily just the city centre, but also further afield in district centres, and out of town retail parks. Obviously issues to do with Liverpool One can still go in the relevant thread, but I thought it would make sense to keep all news, comments, and discussion on other retail issues in the city together in one place.

First is some rather downbeat news that the stand-alone George store in Clayton Square Shopping Centre is to close - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/live...-asda-kills-off-george-brand-100252-20805562/

A planning application has been submitted to make shopfront alterations and install two ATMs at 15 Paradise Street (currently Deichmann Shoes) for Metro Bank.

Metro Bank - https://www.metrobankonline.co.uk
Metro Bank make it slightly easier for people to open a bank account, which is needed for claimants on Universal Credit.

Some of the branches do have an amusement arcade/casino feel about them though

Universal Credit + Betting machines would be a toxic + evil mix... In a bank but it's already out there.

Poor Wonka.

The related documents are now available for this one. As well as the ATMs and new signage, the almost unbroken glazing on the ground and mezzanine floors will see areas of cladding added, particularly to create a surround around the door and horizontally to split the floors. Those wave-like turquoise panels on the top floor will be removed and windows inserted at this level.

Some other points of note from the documents -

- Deichmann will be relocating elsewhere in the city centre.
- Metro Bank wish to make a firm commitment to the places they open. As such they have signed a 25 year lease here.
- The branch will provide toilet and baby changing facilities to anyone, a customer of theirs or not.
- Their 'Magic Money Machine' will convert loose change, again whether you are a customer of theirs or not.
- Accounts can be opened in as little as 15 minutes, including supplying you with a cheque book and bank card there and then. Printing facilities for these will therefore be available in branch.

Those turquoise panels have been there since the 1990s so they are looking a bit dated. This picture is from 2004 when the building was Sports Soccer (later Sports World and now Sports Direct):

Did that Georgian building next to Argos get demolished as part of the Liverpool One construction? That's not there now is it?

How was that not saved?
Yes it was demolished for Liverpool One. It was called Minster House. The ground floor was last occupied by Dodos ladies clothes shop and before that it was John Lewis wallpaper shop (no relation to the John Lewis now on the other side of the road). There were various offices on the upper floors and the Lyceum club actually relocated there when their building in Bold Street was due for demolition in the 1970s.

Here’s a photo of how it looked after the war:

And as John Lewis:

I don’t know if the building was actually as old as it looked. Here’s an article about it from the Echo in 1988:

Yeah that met the wrecking ball. The Paradise Project (as it was), got a lot of things right and fixed countless issues with that part of the city centre. However it wasn't completely perfect, with a few mis-steps along the way, and I always felt this was one of them. Besides the loss of a decent building (one of very few on Paradise Street) it also offered windows extending back a fair way up School Lane, and a side entrance, adding life to the street. The current building offers a dead space to School Lane, and in that respect is also inferior.

That's a huge shame. My favourite part of paradise street is the older retained part with Cote and Jamie's - so it would have been nice to have had some of that character at the other end.

The related docs aren't available when I click on the link. Just a publicity document.

I'd forgotten those gardens + Minster House.
