Photo shows the fire at the old Bank Bumiputra Building in KL. Can anybody guess which year this building was razed?

Bank Bumiputra burnt down same year when it went broke and EPF had to bail out Mokhtar's bank. The fire destroyed all evidence of mismanagement and some people did not have to pay back their "non performing" loans.

What I want to know is that the other piece of vacant land beside Cahaya Suria - I cannot remember what is built in its place now. Can anybody update me on that please .........

Well, before we were all getting crazy about World Cup & European Nations Football Championship; there was the annual Pesta Bola Merdeka where we invited several foreign football teams to come to KL and compete. Thanks for the awesome photos above. What I wanted to know is when was this football competition started and when was it discontinued and for what reason it was discontinued?

Thanks to you as well for all the photos. I think in its role as a national capital, KL was stretched in all directions and people easily forget that role. People assumed that it had to give up it's gracious past to appear relevant, modern and futuristic.

Anyway, a very good and almost philosophical article was written about KL in the NST a few days ago and I completely agree with all that the writer had to say. Here's the link:

Love will win the day for beloved Kuala Lumpur

Here's a photo of a flooded Batu Road (now Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman) looking towards Jalan Raja at the background. The description of the photo says the photo is taken in the 1960s but I think it might be the great 1971 floods. What is your opinion on this?

Thanks for the memories from the football competition, I was hoping to see myself in one of the pictures but can't. Must be a different year or got hidden from view. In the picture with the Malaysian team matching past you can see a boy scout (10th KL) standing near the flag pole. You will also notice the flags on top of the pole has not yet been "unfurled" we had to pull the string to unfurl the flag when they played Negara-ku. After that we act as the ball boys behind the goal post. The goalkeeper in my time was Chow Chee Keong, St John school boy.

I think it is owned by Loke Wan Tho. I am not sure of my spelling, I think he also owns Run Run Shaw. I base my assumption that he owns the row of shop houses next to the Pavilion. He owns shophouses streching from Pudu Jail to the bus station (Pudu Raya?). The shophouses were all rent controlled and any increases were minimal and his estate didn't care because he had more money than he knew what to do with. His estate had an office somewhere in town and my father had to go there every month to pay the rent and he told us there were lots of people there at the end or begining of each month.

A Singapore-Kuala Lumpur phone card. Take note of a few things:

1) Spelling error - "Sultan Abdul Samad" being spelt as "Sultan Abdul Sanad"
2) KL phone numbers are still 7 digits in the 90s - "03-XXXXXXX"
3) The city scene - Sultan Abdul Samad Building and Dataran Merdeka. You can clearly see mini-buses and Sri Jaya buses plying the roads. This city scene could very well be in the 1990s if not mistaken ........

Yup, and some of these buildings are still in their old livery / signage:
1. United Asian Bank - is now the CIMB Tower
2. Bank Bumiputra - became Muamalat Bank
3. Dato' Zainal Building (the one behind BBMB) - cladded grey and looks very modern today
4. Lee Rubber Building - renovated into something more contemporary a few years back
5. Sultan Abdul Samad Building - unchanged since completion!

There was also no KL Tower in the picture (normally it would be somewhere behind the clock tower from this shot), which means this has to be taken in the late 80s or early 90s. If I'm not wrong, KL Tower was completed in 1994, am I correct?

KL Tower was completed in 1994 & officially opened on 1st Oct 1996. Bangunan Dato' Zainal (BDZ) is today Menara Etiqa ...........
