A CATALYST FOR EGYPTIAN RENAISSANCE
Egypt’s New Capital City Revealed

MARCH 13, 2015
SOURCE

After more than a year of being shrouded in mystery, Egypt’s new capital city has been revealed in a slick, new website that went live on Friday.*

Dubbed as a ‘global city for Egypt’s future’ and ‘a city shaped by nature’, the new capital city promises to house up to five million people and provide 1.1 million residential units in a location that is situated along the corridor between Cairo and the Red Sea.

According to the city’s website, the new capital’s central business district will be sized 5.6 kilometres squared and the capital will include 663 healthcare facilities, 40,000 hotel rooms and 1,800,000 meters squared of large retail malls. The capital will also provide 1.75 million permanent jobs, 1,250 religious buildings, 700 kindergartens, 21 residential districts, a theme park and more.

More importantly, however, the new capital city aims to be a ‘Smart City’ that will “embrace an ethos of sustainability” by taking advantage of “the sustainable technologies of today as well as being adaptable to future technology, further enhancing its resource efficiency.”

Part of this Smart City will include 91 kilometres squared of energy farms employing renewable energy sources. Moreover, 100 kilometres squared will be preserved parks and will include a park known as the ‘Capital Park’.

According to the website, the new capital will act as a bridge between Egypt’s rich past and its vibrant future.

The website lists Capital City Partners, a private real estate investment fund by global investors focused on investment and development and led by Emirati Mr. Mohamed Alabbar.

Alabbar, 58, is the founder of Emaar Properties, one of the largest real estate development companies in the Middle East which was also responsible for developing the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Capital City Partners claims it has led “mega-developments of a value of over $US 24 billion in over 15 countries, and helmed the creation of global icons that inspire humanity. This includes King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia…and…Downtown Dubai.”

A conference officially launching the new capital city will be held on Friday.

First Glimpse At Egypt’s New Capital City

MARCH 13, 2015
SOURCE

Photographs have been released across social media providing the first glimpse at Egypt’s new capital city, which was confirmed earlier this month.

The photographs, taken inside the conference centre of Egypt’s Economic Development Conference (EEDC), appear to show a mock-up of the city.

Skyscrapers, villas, large green parks and lakes appear to feature dominantly in the mock-up of the new capital city.

Earlier this month, Egypt’s Minister of Investment Ashraf Salman had announced that Egypt would reveal its plan for the country’s at the EEDC, which kicks off on Friday March 13 at Sharm El-Sheikh.

“We’re talking a very big city. It is just the size of New Cairo itself … It is the ‘new New Cairo’,” said the Minister to The National.

The Minister added that the city, which will be 70,000 acres, will take 12 years to build and will be built to the east of Cairo near Ain El-Sokhna.

While it is not clear who will be responsible for the construction of the city, reports in February on Bloomberg revealed that UAE’s Emaar is in negotiations with the Egyptian government to build the new capital.

Plans to build the new city were first announced by Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb in July 2014.

The proposed city would aim at transferring Ministries, government buildings and foreign embassies from down-town Cairo to the new capital and would be established on the Suez-Cairo-Ain Sokhna road.

City center will have skyscrapers and urban development.
Government district will also have skyscrapers
Grand wadi park will be a big park linking skycrapers and future project just like the one of Washington.
The innovation district will be fully done for corporations and big research centers for the universities and companies.

5 Ways Capital Cairo Will Shape Egypt's Future

MARCH 13, 2015
SOURCE

While Egypt secures billions in investments at the ongoing economic conference, a transformational vision emerges of the futuristic new capital city that promises to solve the troubling issues crippling its current capital. Based on the information released on the website that appeared online on Friday, we decided to compile a list of the five promises that will make the futuristic new capital vastly superior to the old.

A Diversity of Open Walkable Spaces

The new capital city promises 10,000km of pedestrian-friendly boulevards, avenues and streets split off into 21 districts with their own distinct character. Each of the city districts and neighbourhoods will have an open and unique community forum or social centre. In present day Cairo, clean green spaces to walk in are hard to come by. Looking to solve that problem, the new capital city promises to have compact walkable urban neighbourhoods that provide families with safe and green walkways filled with gardens.

A Sustainably Smarter City

Once upon a time one could argue old Cairo was sustainable. However, over time the population of Cairo exploded and with it a slew of poorly planned districts riddled with illegal construction; the result is a densely populated city that has become accustomed to regular blackouts. The new capital Cairo promises to take advantage of the sustainable technologies of today and incorporate into its infrastructure. Aside from recycling organic waste and growing organic produce locally, the new capital Cairo is eyeing the instalment of 91 km2 of energy farms, 100 km2 of green spaces, and the ability to make, reuse and conserve water.

A City of Diverse Permanent Employment

The reason present-day Cairo is over populated and largely unemployed is because it is one of the few job centres in Egypt as whole. This why people from all over Egypt come to Cairo in hopes of finding a job that can make ends meet. In order to persuade five million people to live in the new Capital Cairo, a promise of 1,750,000 permanent jobs spread across a 5.6 km2 Central Business district, a 4,200,000 m2 retail malls, 40,000 hotel rooms, and will include the creation of a new government administrative district. Strategically located along the corridor between Cairo and Red Sea, the new Capital Cairo will be able to provide linkages to significant shipping routes while boosting the economy on all fronts.

A Decongestion Remedy

Cairo’s infamous traffic is a symptom of being a densely populated city that decided to build up instead of out. By 2050 Greater Cairo’s population is set to grow from 18 million to 40 million citizens. Looking to entice five million people to relocate, the new Capital Cairo promises to build 1.1 million residential units spread across 21 districts connected by 140 km2 of major and minor streets that will provide a wide array of public transportation.

Entertaining your Lifestyle

There is plenty of entertainment in present day Cairo, however due to its sprawling, poorly laid out nature going anywhere can be daunting task. Hoping to build the entertainment district of the future, the new Capital Cairo promises to a rich mixed-use community filled with public plazas, recreational spaces, schools, massive retail malls, a 4 km2 theme park and variety of nightlife that is destined to shape this new cities identity.

Of course all of these grand promises sound like a dream, but hopefully this dream becomes a reality because Cairo is in desperate need of a rethink. Rather than destroy a city in order to properly rebuild it, it seems more logical and beneficial to build a new city of dreams just beside instead on top of it.
