Europe's most liveable city? The secret of Odense's post-industrial revolution

Most impressive is the inclusivity of cycling, with 81% of children riding to school and training programmes in place to get even two-year-old kindergarten entrants to trundle to and from home on a balance bike.

Why not just make it as straight as possible?

That would be too easy... and less beautiful.

Two-wheel takeover: bikes outnumber cars for the first time in Copenhagen
Bicycle sensors in Copenhagen clocked a new record this month: there are now more bikes than cars in the heart of the city. In the last year, 35,080 more bikes have joined the daily roll, bringing the total number to 265,700, compared with 252,600 cars.

Copenhagen municipality has been carrying out manual traffic counts at a number of city centre locations since 1970, when there were 351,133 cars and 100,071 bikes. In 2009, the city installed its first electric bike counter by city hall, with 20 now monitoring traffic across the city.

Copenhagen’s efforts to create a cycling city have paid off: bicycle traffic has risen by 68% in the last 20 years.

I really like the project to ride older people around by bike, instead of being locked up all day. Started in Danmark, but seems to be spreading around the world. http://cyclingwithoutage.org/

Tour de Denmark ?

The Tour de France Grand Depart could be heading to Denmark.

Copenhagen has formally expressed its wish to be the location of the Grand Depart by preparing a programme of three-days of racing that include an opening 10km time trial, followed by two flat stages associating the neighbouring islands with finishes at Odense and Sonderborg.

Denmark has a real chance of 75% - to have the Tour in 2020 or 2021.

Denmark is no stranger to hosting large-scale cycling events, having welcomed the Giro d’Italia in 2012 and the UCI World Championships in 2011.

Copenhagen is currently installing 20,000 energy efficient LED street lights. The new lights are not only more energy efficient but are also fitted with smart technology which dims the lights at quieter times and brightens them when needed – such as when a cyclist approaches.

A new cycle and pedestrian rampe opened last summer and forming the missing link on the Valby bike route.
The rampe was built in connection with the redevelopment of the old Carlsberg Brewery on the left and the relocation of the S train station to serve the development.

The same rampe seen from the top of the now completed high rise, on a miserably wet day last week.

Extension of the "bicycle snake" over the railway lines UC relieving the existing narrow bridge from the S train station to the Fisketorv shopping centre and other harbour front developments.
10 metre wide double directional bike bridge. The gap between the bridges was originally intended to be a road but the bikes won.
