Cycling in Sweden

Despite the cold climate cycling is popular in Sweden. Commuters are encouraged to take their bicycle to work instead of their car.

Bicycle paths are found in all major swedish cities.
Bicycle helmet is not compulsory for adults.

The CityBikes in Stockholm (and Uppsala) are very handy for people who live far from the city centre, but want the mobility of a bike whilst there. We have a subscription for citybikes too.

Linköping has many bicycle paths all over the city. It's a very well developed road network for bicyclists with tunnels and bridges.

Given the size of Sweden and given the shifts in climate (and topography) within the country, Malmö is probably the real bicycle capital of Sweden for obvious reasons (no topographical obstructions such as mountains/hills/lakes, mostly fair weather, seldom below -5C in the winter etc. ).
In many places, small-to midsize towns especially but also when I lived in Uppsala they put the bike aside for storage during the winter.

I bicycle to work all year round. If the temperature sinks below -10 C I walk with the bicycle.

Plenty of people bike in winter in Uppsala. It's only right after a heavy snowfall when the roads haven't been cleared yet, or after a freeze during a thaw period (when the roads are covered in ice) that most people leave their bikes at home. I and most of my friends when I was studying would bike all year round. I never even owned a bus pass.

Depends on where you study I suppose. SLU is quite off given where most students (and other townspeople) live compared to Uppsala University and those I knew who studied or worked at SLU took the bus during the winter. And I should also add that there were quite cold winters when I was living there. But you're right that there were bicyclists (including myself) in Uppsala winter time nonetheless.


Nevertheless university cities are an exception. It doesn't matter what the friggin' climate is as long as the wallet doesn't get any thinner

Stockholm has gone through a change. It used to be a very car oriented city until the 21th century, now many parking spots have become bicycle lanes , making it easy and safe to bicycle even in the very heart of the city.
