Andhra offers land for Vedanta varsity

The Andhra Pradesh government has offered the UK-based Anil Agarwal Foundation land to set up the Rs 15,000-crore Vedanta University, a project primarily conceived for Odisha but stuck in a land acquisition imbroglio.

The Andhra government has offered the foundation land for the project at the sprawling Knowledge City in Amaravati, the upcoming capital of the state.

The Vedanta Group, which runs the Rs 5,000-crore alumina refinery plant at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi, a smelter pant and a captive power plant at Jharsuguda, signed an MoU with the Odisha government on July 19, 2006, to set up the university on 7,000 acres on the Puri-Konark Marine Drive.

The state government had given over 3,837 acres to the foundation to set up the project on the Puri-Konark Marine Drive. However, before it could take off, the project ran into trouble over land acquisition.

The state Lokayukta had, in March 2010, questioned the methods used to acquire land for the project. The anti-grafts body said the status of Vedanta Foundation, which was later converted into Anil Agarwal Foundation, had been wrongly changed from a private to a public company. Lokpal Justice P.K. Patra had, in his report, recommended for appointing a competent authority to thoroughly probe the land deal.

In 2010, Orissa High Court had struck down the acquisition on procedural issues and directed the state government to restore land to the original owners.

The matter had also sparked off a political storm with the Opposition stalling the Assembly and demanding the resignation of chief minister Naveen Patnaik over the issue.

In 2011, the state government and the foundation had moved the Supreme Court over the matter, where it is still pending. During the hearing on November 28 last year, the apex court wondered why anyone should oppose formation of a world-class university as it would benefit one lakh students. The court had ordered status quo in the case.

"Why should anyone oppose setting up of a world-class university which will give opportunity to over one lakh students? If somebody is making an investment of Rs 2,500 crore in education, why should somebody oppose it? Students will benefit. Public would benefit," Chief Justice T.S. Thakur said.

The matter was listed for hearing in February this year and was adjourned without a hearing.

To save the project, the foundation had recently made an informal appeal to the Odisha government to provide them with an alternative location.

Last week, Odisha's revenue secretary Chandrasekhar Kumar had convened a meeting to discuss the land issue. "Once we receive a formal proposal, we will consider it," Kumar told The Telegraph.

As the state government delays to address the foundation's plea, the offer of the Andhra Pradesh government has further tweaked the situation to Odisha's disadvantage.

"We have plans to develop a knowledge city in Amaravati, and we would love to explore any potential collaboration. There is a great deal of interest from Hon'ble chief minister to operationalise the area of collaboration," said Andhra Pradesh Economic Board CEO J. Krishna Kishore, in a letter, to the Vedanta Group chief Anil Agarwal last month.

President of the Vedanta University Project and former chief secretary of Odisha, B.K. Patnaik, told The Telegraph: "A letter has been received from the Andhra Pradesh government addressed to chairman Anil Agarwal requesting him to set up a world-class institution such as Harvard University on a large tract of land in Amaravati."

He, however, declined to elaborate further.

Once completed the university would have 95 departments with specialised research in all major branches of academics. The programmes proposed include BA, BSc, BTech, MBBS, MA, MSc, M Phil, MBA and PhD.

The varsity also proposes to set up professional schools in agriculture, engineering, applied and computer science management, media, design, creative and performing arts, law, medicine and mass communication.

There will also be cross-cultural centres of excellence in health sciences, manufacturing sciences, agricultural research, rural economics, information & communication technology, pharmaceutical sciences, urban planning & policy, nano-technology and biotechnology.

Such a large scale university and may be one of it's kind in the country, if materialized it will give a big boost to Amaravati and AndhraPradesh state in education field, but is it possible for government to provide such huge land inside Amaravati? nearby districts may be possible. As a matter of fact, Odisha too badly needs such an investment to come up in their state. Wherever it may come, the university should be started without any further delay. India needs such huge investments in education sector.

Mahesh Babu ventures into education?

Little bit of cinema attraction will definitely accelerate speedy investments.

Buzz is that actor Mahesh Babu is keen to invest in education. Sources tell us that the actor has evinced interest in setting up a never seen before international school in the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Amaravati.
“The actor isn’t going to be the sole in charge of this venture though he is co-investing with a close family friend, who’s also a well known person in the film industry. The duo felt Amaravati was a land of new opportunities and that they should give the place the first ever international school of great standards,” reveals a source.

Interestingly, the initial ideal location thought out for the school was Hyderabad. But with Amaravati set to become a model city, and Hyderabad already having a lot of such schools, Mahesh and his partner chose the new city for the scope it offered. The duo is said to be seeing a great benefit in the form of the incentives that the government of Andhra Pradesh would provide to people who start major ventures in the state.
While sources tell us that all this is still in the planning stage, it is to be seen if this works out and how it will shape up.

World Class Business School in Amaravati

Amaravati: He built the global IT hub of Hyderabad from the ground up, but lost it after Andhra Pradesh split. Not one to wallow over losses, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is back to doing what he does best – building world-class institutions like the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.

Naidu is now rolling up his sleeves to outdo the legacy that he left behind in Telangana and is busy drawing up a blueprint to set up a premier institute of excellence in the public private partnership mode to outshine ISB.

The institution is proposed to be set up in the Amaravati capital region over nearly 100 acres at a cost of 500 crore. For this, he plans to rope in the best of the best of the global academic world like the London School of Economics, Harvard Kennedy School, National University of Singapore as well as the University of Birmingham as well as the who’s who of the global corporate world. Various UN agencies, the World Bank, ADB and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are some of the other intended global partners for the project.

“The idea is that each of the 10 or more industry partners would contribute 50 crore under their CSR head and would be part of the governing board,” said former AP chief secretary SP Tucker, who has been appointed mentor of the proposed institute.

And Naidu has found the man for the job – Pramath Raj Sinha, founding dean of ISB and co-founder of Ashoka University.

“We approached Sinha and he has agreed to be our consultant and anchor the institute. We will be working out an arrangement soon,” said Tucker, who is also executive vice-chairman of AP Economic Development Board.

The institute would be modelled around ISB, but on a much larger scale and with a vision to include elimination of poverty and development of society as its objective.

“Our CM has the successful experience of bringing ISB to Hyderabad. We now plan to have this institute at Amaravati on a much bigger scale. We will be meeting the CM with ideas on courses and blueprint. He will take a call on how this institute will shape up,” Tucker said.

The institution of global scale would offer very refined MBAs with specializations in niche segments. “The institute will be an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organisation. It shall perform functions of consulting, primary and applied research, global annual discussion and learning forums, performance evaluation and monitoring and education that provides management skills to the government work force,” says the concept note with the theme – Crafting solutions for a sustainable future.

Describing it as Naidu’s brainchild, the CM’s advisor (communications) Parakala Prabhakar said: “The CM wanted a world class think-tank in our state to cater to the knowledge needs of governments and businesses of the country and that it should welcome some of the finest academicians and thinkers from across the globe.”

The institute’s activities would be in accordance with the State’s Sunrise Vision 2029 framework to transform AP into “a happy, inclusive and globally competitive society”.

NID set to shift to new campus in Amaravati

Amaravati: Adding another feather in the cap of capital Amaravati, the National Institute of Design, Vijayawada, which is presently running its temporary campus on the premises of Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, is planning to shift to its own premises to come up in Amaravati region in a sprawling 50 acre land allotted by the state government. The NID-V, was established in September 2015 as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Planning and Promotion(DIPP) Union ministry of commerce and industry. It is the only NID to come up in the entire south India, since NID, Ahmedabad, was set up five decades ago.

It is the first NID to be set up in accordance with the National Design Policy, approved by Parliament in 2007 for establishing four new NIDs across the country which include Kurukshetra in Haryana (started in 2016), Jorhat in Assam and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, both yet to be set up.

NID-V has successfully completed two batches of 4-year graduate diploma programme in design in three broader groups viz., Industrial Design, Communication Design and Textile and Apparel Design. Each batch consists of 60 students and admission to 4-year graduate diploma is done through a common written entrance test (Design Aptitude Test), conducted in 18 major cities across the country for all NIDs. Shortlisted candidates of the test will be called for a studio test and personal interview for final selection.

According to Prof Nikhil Saxena, Consultant Dean of NID-V, though the classes are presently running temporarily on ANU campus, all the heavy machinery and equipment for conducting practicals and making prototypes have been placed properly in the studio rooms, which are essential for the students.

“We have nine faculty members in the ratio of 1:15 and for each programme, the number of students will be 20. Experts, professionals and designers from various fields will also teach the students as visiting faculty members. Our permanent buildings are under construction in the Amaravati area near to VIT and by next year (2018), we are likely to shif there. Presently, the students have been provided with hostel facility in a private apartment from where they are transported to campus by buses and after completion of permanent buildings by next year, this problem will be resolved,” he said.

However, only one student from AP and two students from Telangana are pursuing their third-year degree in the institution. According to P Karthik, the student from AP, who is the one and only day scholar in the entire NID-V; most of the students who joined here belong to northern states, who are more interested in design courses. “From south India, there are students from Kerala.

The youth of both the Telugu states are more interested in professional courses like engineering and medicine and opt for IT jobs. But, there are plenty of opportunities for the graduates of NID, such as consultants for industries concerned to various fields and also, they can work as freelance designers even for film industry. The visual communication course provides classes in cinematography, graphic designing, animation, branding, television and film-making will offers ample opportunities to the students, who wish to join in communication fields,” he said.

NID-V has provided latest machinery and equipment including large screen computers for giving best practical training to the students. “We have the best machinery, which is imported one which can even cut and mould any metal. We are even having touch screen computer systems, where we can draw sketches with our finger tips. Students will be trained with perfection and after every semester (every six months) the jury (faculty from Ahmedabad and expert designers) will judge the prototypes (models) designed by the students, which will be exhibited and give marks.

There will not be written examinations for the students and they have to exhibit their prototypes, which will decide their abilities. The 4-year graduate diploma programme in three broader groups will provide good career opportunities from industry and advance education opportunities from the design schools of repute,” Mohan Singh, Design Inspector of NID-V said.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's Campus To Come Up In Andhra Pradesh

https://www.ndtv.com/education/amrit...radesh-1809758

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today laid the foundation stone for Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham s campus at Nowluru village near here.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today laid the foundation stone for Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham s campus at Nowluru village near here. The Mata Amritanandamayi Math, a charitable group, is setting up the Vidyapeetham, a deemed-to-be university, with an investment of Rs. 2,500 crore. It will be spread over 200 acres. This is the third major educational institute, after SRM and the Vellore Institute of Technology, to come up in Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.

"This will be our seventh campus after Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Kochi, Mysuru, Bengaluru and Faridabad. Focus will be on research, higher education and human values at our institution," Vidyapeetham Vice-Chancellor Venkat Rangan said on the occasion.
